Dear colleagues and friends,

Breast Cancer Awareness Month—an annual October campaign to raise awareness about the most common cancer for women worldwide—is drawing to a close. However, SBP's fight against breast cancer continues.

At our NCI-designated Cancer Center, SBP researchers are pursuing the most advanced approaches to understand and treat the disease, including immunotherapies, predictive diagnostics and personalized medicines that will improve the lives of people with breast cancer.

In this issue, we highlight SBP Insights—an event designed to educate the community about the path from research to breast cancer treatment breakthroughs. We also share other important discoveries made by SBP scientists in genetic and infectious diseases.

We hope you will join us at several upcoming events, including our fundraising gala, which provides critical support for our biomedical research. In November, we will open our doors for a behind-the-scenes look at our Cancer Center. And, we invite you to register for Padres Pedal the Cause, a one-day event that raises funds for cancer research in San Diego.

Solving a medical mystery: Saul-Wilson syndrome

For children born with Saul-Wilson syndrome, and their parents, much of their lives are spent searching for answers. First defined in 1990, only 14 cases of this form of dwarfism are known worldwide. Now, thanks to Hudson Freeze, Ph.D., his team and collaborators around the globe, these individuals know the cause of the condition: a gene alteration that codes for a protein that helps control and maintain the cell’s protein packager, the Golgi complex.

Path to deadly sepsis varies by bacterial infection

Sepsis remains a common and deadly condition that occurs when the body reacts to an infection in the bloodstream. Scientists know little about the early stages of the condition; however, physicians must act fast. Every hour that passes without one or more of the few treatments available increases the risk of death. Now, research led by Jamey Marth, Ph.D., into sepsis progression may hold the key to developing more effective treatments.

Salsa for science at SBP's annual gala

This year’s annual gala, themed “The Copacabana,” will take place on November 3. Honorary co-chairs Roberta Burnham, Jeanne Herberger and Debbie Turner are planning an unforgettable evening, featuring delicious food, phenomenal drinks and, of course, incredible music and dancing—all in support of the groundbreaking biomedical research taking place at SBP. We hope you can join us!

SBP's NCI-designated Cancer Center open house

On November 8, our Cancer Center will open its doors for a rare behind-the-scenes look into how our scientists are investigating the underlying causes of cancer. Guests will have the opportunity to mingle with cancer researchers, survivors and research advocates during an informal evening reception.

Padres Pedal the Cause

Join our growing team of scientists, staff and SBP supporters on November 17 as we participate in Padres Pedal the Cause! This one-day event raises funds for life-saving cancer research in San Diego. The annual challenge includes four cycling courses, spin classes, and a 5K walk/run, all finishing centerfield at Petco Park.
