Supporting Our Seawolves’ Mental Health: Counseling and Psychological Services

Hello Seawolf Families! Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) has been an integral part of our community supporting our students to conquer personal obstacles and unleash their potential to become the best version of themselves. We strive daily to provide the best quality mental health care for our students. CAPS provides initial consultations, individual therapy, group therapy, medication management, and care coordination services. CAPS offers evening and weekend crisis support and consultation services through our 24/7 CAPS Crisis Line.

To expand our virtual offerings we have partnered with TimelyCare to provide scheduled individual therapy and unlimited Talk Now sessions for all our busy Seawolves after hours, on weekends, and on holidays.

CAPS website (stonybrook.edu/caps) is a wealth of information to help you and your students learn more about these services and how to navigate them. By collaborating with our students on their mental health care journey we create an inclusive and empowering space to help them be the driver of their health and wellness choices.

Tips from Students

What's it like to be a student at SBU? Hear it from a Seawolf!

As the semester nears its end, students might feel overwhelmed as academic responsibilities increase. We hear from Devin Lobosco, a biochemistry and Women's Studies double major, Executive Vice President of the Undergraduate Student Government and a Peer Educator for the Center for Prevention and Outreach. In this video, Devin talks about what students can do when they're feeling overwhelmed, and what are some things parents and families can do to support their students.

Tips from Students - How to Support Your Student When They're Overwhelmed

Sprinkling Support: Salt Shaker Parenting

Our metaphor of being a Salt Shaker parent means sprinkling your student with support, questions, and love in a gentle, subtle way.

How to Support Your Student’s Emotional Wellness

As family members, we want our students to always be at peace and happy. But as human beings, we understand this is not a reality; there are moments in life that include worry and sadness. What we can do when our children are suffering is provide them with our love, empathy and some gentle guidance on options for supportive resources, along with ideas for a possible path forward.

As members of the Student Support Team, we often meet students who may be struggling with relationship difficulties, academic stress, or financial burdens and we have found the most helpful tool we have is our ears! While we may think we know the quickest, best answer for relief, our goal is to help students get to their own resolution, by listening and asking pertinent questions.

If you see your student is hurting, take some time to gently check-in to see if they are open to discussing what is troubling them. If they do let you in, make sure to be patient and let them take the lead on what they are comfortable sharing. If you are concerned they may need more help, make sure to share the Student Support Team’s information with them. We are here to listen and connect students to the appropriate campus resources for support.

If you want to speak with a Family Services and Support Team member, please reach out! The Family Services and Support Team is aware there may be times when a family member just needs to talk over a concern about their child, with the intention of gaining a better understanding of the situation and resources that may be available. The Family Services and Support Team partners with family members in working toward student success!

Career Planning Tools for Undecided Students

If your student is not sure about their career path, the summer is the best time to figure it out. Deciding on a career path involves not only researching the fields of interest and connecting with professionals in the field, but also developing self-knowledge by taking self-assessments that will help your student make more confident career decisions.
