Gearing up for the Fall
SBWPC Members,

The Santa Barbara Women's Political Committee is gearing up for the Fall with our upcoming Endorsement Meeting and several events coming up in August. More information on these events is listed below.

A reminder that SBWPC takes its endorsement process very seriously and we stand by the integrity of the process. Member and Board volunteers serve on Candidate Assessment Teams to evaluate candidates based on our position papers and their feminist values. Endorsements are just the first step – we need your support to provide the financial support candidates need to run a strong, effective campaign. Consider updating your membership or making a donation to SBWPC to help in this cause.

In July, SBWPC participated in the national Lights for Liberty event. This was a powerful gathering of hundreds of members of our community. We stood together to reflect on what is happening to families and children on our borders and demand that our national leaders put an end to family separate and to the internment of migrants. It was my honor to speak on behalf of our organization. As an immigrant and a mother, I cannot imagine the horror of the conditions children are subjected to in these camps. We urge our members to continue to be involved with local immigrant rights organizations.

Another Mass Shooting

As this newsletter was being finalized, news came in about a mass shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. The Garlic Festival is a proud annual tradition. It is festive and well attended by tourists, residents, families, etc. To think that this shooting took place amidst this joyful summer event is truly heartbreaking.

This is, of course, not the first mass shooting at a community event - and, sadly, it will not be the last. The Santa Barbara Women's Political Committee mourns for those who were killed and all that are affected. We reaffirm our call for policymakers at every level of government to do all they can to reduce gun violence.

Like you, we are tired of "Thoughts and Prayers" - When will it be enough?
