From the President's Desk

Time to have our voices heard
SBWPC Members,

This month, has already brought with it unprecedented attacks on reproductive rights and an administration that continues to disregard the rights of women, people of color and families.

Since the start of 2019,  bills attempting to restrict abortion  have been filed in 45 states. Anti-abortion lawmakers are aggressively pursuing a sweeping national strategy to dismantle reproductive health care and outlaw safe, legal abortion. This will ultimately come before the Supreme Court. Join us in a local visibility action on Tuesday, May 21 (more information below).

An additional tragic revelation earlier this week involved the report of a Guatemalan toddler who died in a hospital earlier this week, just over a month after he and his mother crossed the southwest border and were apprehended. The boy is the fourth Guatemalan minor to die after crossing the border and being apprehended by the border patrol since December. Conditions at border detention facilities continue to be reported as inhumane - with no resolution in sight.

It is easy to feel despair and helplessness in the face of relentless attacks and tragedy. But as women, we have proven time and again that when faced with adversity - we persist .

More than ever we need your continued involvement and support to do our work. We will be looking for the best candidates in upcoming races and will work to ensure we have strong feminists in elected offices at every level of government . Join us in this fight.

Adelante/Onward,

Luz Reyes-Martín
President

Medicare for All Act

The Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee regards the Medicare for All Act as an important step forward in achieving a good national health care system at reasonable cost for all.

SBWPC President Luz Reyes-Martin joined nationally recognized Medicare for All activist, Ady Barkan , and other community activists in a meeting with Congressman Salud Carbajal to urge him to support this legislation. Join us in telling Congressman Carbajal to support the Medicare for All Act.
Fund for a Feminist Future

A Fund for a Feminist Future (FFF) is a dedicated fund of the Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee (SBWPC) to promote progressive, feminist political involvement. Its goal is to increase the number of feminist women in elected and appointed office and in other positions where issues important to the quality of life for women and families are raised and discussed, policies made and legislation enacted.

FFF funds are exclusively used in two areas: campaign training and campaign contributions. FFF provides scholarships to qualified SBWPC women members interested in elected or appointed public office so they can acquire the necessary skills to conduct effective political campaigns. FFF also contributes to the campaigns of feminist women political candidates endorsed by SBWPC. FFF is sustained by targeted financial gifts, large and small, grants and fundraising activities.
