SC State joins with University of the West Indies for ‘Black Diversity in the Americas’ virtual seminar

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – South Carolina State University's Department of Social Sciences will cosponsor a virtual seminar entitled “Black Diversity in the Americas” beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, 2023.

The event is in tandem with the Sociology Unit, Department of Behavioral Sciences at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine (UWI),

The program will be co-hosted by Dr. Alison Mc Letchie, assistant professor of sociology and anthropology at SC State, and Dr. Shelene Gomes, sociology lecturer at UWI.


The seminar will consider the Gullah Geechee (U.S.) and Merikin (Trinidad) legacies in the making of the Americas and their contemporary realities from academic and activist perspectives. The focus will include language; cultural expressions and heritage; land tenure; sustainability; resistance and liberation.

Dr. Alison Mc Letchie

Mc Letchie, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in psychology in 2000 from SC State. She went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in anthropology, a certificate in museum management in 2003 and Ph.D. in sociology in 2013 -- all from the University of South Carolina. Her book “Contributions of Historically Black Colleges and University in the 21st Century,” which was co-edited with Dr. Anisah Bagasra and Dr. Jonathan Wesley, was published in 2022.
