Are you sure you want to open that e-mail?
Greetings!
There are a number of scam and virus emails floating around that look extremely legitimate using logos, names and "calls for action" that are very tempting to you, the recipient. They entice you to open an attachment on the email and/or provide personal information that allows the sender to begin their corruptive activities.
When receiving one of these e-mails, it is always best to check their legitimacy by contacting the company or institution represented in the content by phone or other contact option rather than using the information attached or incorporated into the email.
Below are just a few examples of some of the e-mails we have seen as of late. If you have any questions that we may be able to answer for you, please don't hesitate to call us.
Remember: When it comes to your computer network, PC or personal information, it is always best to error on the side of caution.

What is the Bank of America Online Account Scam?
This scam assumes you have a Bank of America online account. The senders of this e-mail are prompting you to utilize their provided link which will take you to a very authentic looking site where they request confirmation information on your account. If you provide this private information, they move very quickly to drain your account and sell your identity information.
Don't be fooled by this or any other banking scams.
Your bank will NEVER ask for confidential information
via a link on an e-mail. |
If you can't trust McDonald's . . .
An e-mail scam hitting inboxes across the globe is promoting a free dinner at one of the world's largest fast-food chains. The catch is that you need to print the attached coupon, which is actually an executable for a well-established family of Malware.
The wording of the email is mostly European, using promotional terms that would be rare, if not completely out of place for a U.S. promotion. Not to mention, the brand is spelled incorrectly. However, the attachment itself is the real problem. It's Malware. More to the point, it's a variant of the Bredolab family of Malware.
The Bredolab botnet was reported to have pushed nearly 3.6 billion malicious e-mails a month at its peak. The Malware spread via email attachments or links found on social networks. The most common method of infection however, is e-mail.

Isn't it nice that they "earnestly ask" for your
PRIVATE INFORMATION!
As official as it looks, this is just another attempt to steal your private information, attack your accounts and sell your identity.
If something really needed to be addressed, you would receive a phone call, or, be asked to call the bank direct. Always confirm ANY contact - even phone contact.
Be Cautious - Be Careful - Be Safe!

Here's a package you Don't Want!

Just like the DHL and FedEx emails, this message likely contains trojans or malware that will zombify your computer. If you see any "notification message" from DHL, FedEx or UPS and you don't have a scheduled delivery,
DELETE IT IMMEDIATELY.
There are a lot safer ways to contact these entities
to track your delivery.
Better to be safe than sorry. |

Just Confirming? . . . Right . . .

How nice of them to confirm you ordered that new AMEX Card. The problem is, you may not even own an American Express card! Certainly, this must be a legitimate e-mail. Look . . . they even have a "phishing" website at the bottom to report anything that comes from someone who may be "less scrupulous" than the senders of this e-mail.
DON'T BE FOOLED!
THEY'RE "PHISHING" FOR YOUR PRIVATE INFORMATION.
If you ordered a card, call American Express.
NEVER utilize links in e-mails when dealing with private information. |
|
This Fraud Alert IS the FRAUD!

American Express is sure popular lately. Here it's nice to see they're looking out for your personal protection. The problem is, the people who sent you this e-mail are interested in stealing your identity - not protecting it. Legitimate companies will never contact you in this manner to address confidential information.
Protect yourself - Delete this e-mail! |
|
Official looking logo. Isn't it?

Thankfully, you don't have an ACH transaction that has been rejected. But someone is prompting you to use the convenient link they have provided in the e-mail to entice you to provide them with confidential information they can use to access your most confidential information and/or corrupt your computer system.
DON'T BE FOOLED!
DELETE THIS E-MAIL, IMMEDIATELY! |
|
WOW! How Official Does This Look?

But as you can guess, it's just another scam to "phish" for your confidential information. Regardless the bank you use, they will never use this kind of notification if issues arise with your account. Delete this e-mail and never communicate confidential information via a link in an e-mail. |
|
Rejected Tax Payment?
This is sure to get your attention!
Hopefully, you'll realize these people are justy "phishing" for your information and using an official looking logo to prompt your "call to action." This is nothing more than another attempt to steal you most confidential information and corrupt you computer system by clicking on the .exc link in the body of the e-mail.

What is "Phishing?"
Phishing is a way of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. This is similar to Fishing, where the fisherman puts a bait at the hook, thus, pretending to be a genuine food for fish. But the hook inside it takes the complete fish out of the lake. Communications purporting to be from popular social web sites, auction sites, online payment processors or IT administrators are commonly used to lure the unsuspecting public. Phishing is typically carried out by e-mail spoofing or instant messaging and it often directs users to enter details at a fake website whose look and feel are almost identical to the legitimate one. Phishing is an example of social engineering techniques used to deceive users, and exploits the poor usability of current web security technologies. Attempts to deal with the growing number of reported phishing incidents include legislation, user training, public awareness, and technical security measures.

Your chances of becoming a victim are 1 in 4!
Identity theft statistics are shocking! In the past five years, 1 in 4 Americans was a victim of identity theft making it America's fastest growing crime. Identity theft statistics indicate that this crime costs the government, businesses, and citizens of America billions of dollars each year. Victims of identity theft are left with both financial and emotional challenges. Identity theft statistics show the average cost of identity theft is 30 hours and $500 per victim. However, identity theft is a preventable crime if you are properly protected. The Federal Trade Commission recently conducted a study on identity theft with identity theft statistics. Below is a short summary of the alarming identity theft statistics they compiled.

* Total loss to Businesses as a result of Identity Theft exceeded $47.5 BILLION.
* Total loss to Individuals reached $5.0 BILLION
* Hours spent resolving Identiy Theft problems totaled nearly 300 MILLION HOURS

Can My Smartphone
The amount of new 'malware' (malicious software) that is being written to infect computers that are on the Internet continues to grow at a fever pitch.
Most of the really sophisticated malware is written by organized crime syndicates around the world that have plenty of resources and a really big motivator: your identity.
A recent study shows that if you search for entertainment sites (music, video, games, software, etc.) and include the word 'free', your chances of coming across a malicious website goes up exponentially; in some cases 300%!
Additionally popular items like ringtones, wallpaper and screensavers have traditionally been big targets of the malware producers, so be careful what you search for!
When it comes to your question about smartphone vulnerabilities, if you're referring to the common 'drive-by download' attack that silently slips malicious programs into your computer when you visit a rogue website, the answer (for time being) is no.
