Delysia Riddick Chairs SCAN Blue and White Ball
Delysia joined SCAN’s Board of Young Professionals in 2020. She is currently serving as the Chair of the SCAN Blue and White Ball (hosted by the BYP) on March 4, 2023. Her leadership, enthusiasm, and passion have been an incredible part of SCAN and the BYP!

How did you first get involved with SCAN?
I first became involved with SCAN when a few members of the Circle Preschool Program team worked with my preschool team within Henrico County Public Schools. In learning about their work and visiting their classroom, I was impressed by their systems, demeanor, and care for the children. This really aligned with what I was doing in the classroom. As I moved to work outside of the classroom, I knew I wanted to get more involved with SCAN.

What has your life/work experience been that brought you to SCAN?
I was a classroom teacher for about 13 years in both private and public schools in the early childhood space. I’m currently an early childhood mental health consultant. I work with parents, teachers and/or directors if they have a child displaying challenging behaviors. I help with modeling, coaching and help them manage feelings of stress and burnout through a state funded and led project.

What inspires you to stay involved with your work at SCAN?
Realizing and recognizing that SCAN doesn’t have just one program or project. SCAN’s five programs share a common goal of providing support for children. SCAN also has such a reputation in the community that many types of stakeholders want to partner on this mission. It helps to know my little part could do something to help a child.

Is there anything you wish other people knew about SCAN?
I wish people knew that even though some of SCAN’s work is heavy, there is a lot of hope and there is a strong community within SCAN that wants to help. The people I have met through SCAN have helped me in my personal and professional life. I didn’t realize the deep connections I would make as part of the BYP and the care I would see. This community is very motivating and makes me want to do more.

What has been the best experience with SCAN so far?
I really enjoyed the BYP giftcard drive at Ardent a few weeks ago. This was one of the first post-pandemic events I’ve been to where people really showed up. It was cool to interact with the public that was looking to learn more about SCAN. I also really enjoyed volunteering at the Moonlight Ride when I first joined the BYP. It was out of my comfort zone, but such a great way to help alongside other wonderful SCAN volunteers and be social.

Do you have any goals or hopes for the next year with SCAN?
I hope we continue to attract members that want to connect their network with what the BYP is doing. I also hope the BYP can continue to do in person events and social gatherings.

Are you involved with any other community organizations, hobbies, or activities?
I am also a Board member of the Virginia Association for Education of Young Children and am helping to work on their big conference in March. I’m also currently trying to visit all the Virginia Presidential homes. I also enjoy being able to take my nephews to the park, library and Science Museum.

What might someone be surprised to learn about you?
I am a Britney Spears super fan and also a Dr. Pepper fan!

SCAN Focus on Primary Prevention
SCAN has a renewed and increased focus on child and family well-being or preventing child abuse and neglect before it occurs by ensuring all caregivers and families receive support. Olivya Wilson, LCSW, recently expanded her role at SCAN to take on a position as the part-time Prevention Specialist. In this role, Olivya will help guide the future direction of SCAN's Primary Prevention Services. She will also be working with organizations and groups in the community to lift up caregivers and coordinate efforts. Additionally, helping to elevate caregiver voice within SCAN's prevention efforts will be a priority in this work.

She is also providing direct support to caregivers in the community through Circle of Parents groups. Circle of Parents® provides a friendly, supportive environment facilitated by trained facilitators, but led by parents and other caregivers. It’s a place where anyone in a parenting role can openly discuss the successes and challenges of raising children. It’s a place where they can find and share support. Find more information about Olivya's current Circle of Parents group here.
