Greg Crapanzano Chairs SCAN Spring Fling
Greg has been on SCAN’s Board of Young Professionals since 2019 and is serving as the SCAN Spring Fling event Chair this year. He also volunteers his time and law expertise by assisting SCAN program staff with subpoenas. SCAN is thankful for Greg’s leadership skills, willingness to share his expertise, and his passion for our programs and getting others involved!

How did you first get involved with SCAN?
My neighbors Marly and Jeremy have been involved with SCAN for many years and thankfully introduced me to SCAN and invited me to join the BYP!

What has your life/work experience been that brought you to SCAN?
As a first-generation college student, I have been involved in child advocacy positions starting in 2005 when I founded a club at UVA called Peanuts and Crackerjacks that tutored Charlottesville elementary schoolers and did trips to UVA baseball games in the spring. I have also participated in reading programs and coached mock trial teams in New York City.

What inspires you to stay involved with SCAN?
SCAN’s vision and programs are just unparalleled and provide a worthy cause to fight for, but the people involved really make it easy to give more and more of yourself to the organization. Everyone who works for and volunteers with SCAN brings excitement and passion to their work and it is truly inspiring. I am also an attorney and have volunteered for the past few years to respond to subpoenas received by SCAN.

Is there anything you wish other people knew about SCAN?

I wish that people realized how many programs SCAN has in its multi-faceted approach to addressing child abuse and trauma. From the Child Advocacy Center to help children and families navigate the court system, family support and education, to the Circle Preschool. The wholistic resources available really set SCAN apart and underscore how vital SCAN is to the community and protecting and advocating for Richmond’s most vulnerable residents.

What has been the best experience with SCAN so far?
SCAN’s Santa Shop is just awe-inspiring. I was able to volunteer at the last pre-Covid Santa Shop in 2019 and the number and quality of donations, along with the incredible decorations and activities for kids to do while the parents shop (meet Santa, arts and crafts), was phenomenal. It is also a great opportunity for SCAN volunteers to get together and break a sweat setting up donation rooms and decorating.

Do you have any goals or hopes for the next year?
This year I am the chair of the Events Committee and we are planning this year’s annual fundraiser. It is set for May 21 at the Fairfield in Richmond, a private home with beautiful grounds. There will be a fantastic live band playing favorites from the 80s and 90s, (The Tight Slacks), lawn games, food, and adult beverages. Also an amazing silent auction loaded with amazing items and experiences. My goal of this year is nothing short of setting records for attendance and total funds raised! You can get your tickets now!

Are you involved with any other community organizations, hobbies, or activities?
I am on the Board of Directors of the disAbility Law Center of Virginia (dLCV), an organization that provides legislative advocacy and legal representation to advocate for and protect the rights of people with disabilities throughout Virginia. I am also on Washington and Lee Law’s Young Alumni Council. My hobbies include being a new dad, hiking around Virginia, UVA basketball, and being in and around water as often as possible.
