Interview with Charity Howell

SCAN Board Member

How did you first get involved with SCAN? A former SCAN Board Member, Tyee Mallory, is a good friend and colleague and she asked if I was interested in a board opportunity.

What has your life/work experience been that brought you to SCAN? What is your current role?  For 7 years, I've been working with Members of Congress to manage their relationships in their district/state and worked with stakeholders, non profits, universities, and many many more important organizations doing great things to connect them to their members of Congress or federal agency partners. In that work, I was introduced to the amazing work that SCAN does and how they help so many families in Richmond and beyond. I am currently working as District Director for Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan but will soon be starting in a new role with our newly inaugurated Governor Spanberger.

What inspires you to stay involved with SCAN? As a Richmond native and Richmond Public Schools graduate I understand the high need for the work SCAN does in our communities.

Is there anything you wish other people knew about SCAN? I wish people knew more about the Circe Preschool Program!

What has been the best experience with SCAN so far? The Child Advocates Breakfast was an amazing event that I really enjoyed.

What are any challenges you have faced in your work with SCAN? Learning all of the things SCAN actually does. There are so many!!

Do you have any goals or hopes for the next year with SCAN? I am hoping to get involved more with planning the Progressive Dinner and help recruit more CASA volunteers.

Are you involved with any other community organizations, hobbies, or activities? I'm a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Metro Richmond Area Young Democrats. I love going to the movies, concerts, and traveling with friends and family.

What might someone be surprised to learn about you? Me and former President Barack Obama share an ancestor, John Punch, who is known as the first person to become legally enslaved under civil law.

Is there anything I didn’t ask that you wish I had? Who is someone you'd want to grab a drink with, dead or alive? Answer: Anthony Bourdain, without a doubt!
