Interview with Lindy Collins

SCAN Board of Young Professionals Member

How did you first get involved with SCAN?

Around 10 years ago, I volunteered to do childcare for the Family Support Program Treatment Groups.

What has your life/work experience been that brought you to SCAN? What is your current role?

I’ve been a social worker, serving children with trauma, since 2013. I became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in 2018 and have been providing licensure supervision since 2022. I joined the BYP in 2024. I am currently an outpatient therapist in private practice.

I’ve had many interactions with SCAN throughout my career: attending trainings, participating in the GRTICN and Trauma Informed Supervision program, linking therapy clients to the Child Advocacy Center after abuse disclosures, referring parents to the Family Support Treatment Group, and collaborating with CASA workers on shared cases. I joined the BYP last year to help further SCAN’s impact in the community and raise awareness about Child Abuse Prevention.

What inspires you to stay involved with SCAN?

SCAN’s mission and core values align with mine. I’m inspired by the quote, “There is no such thing as other people’s children.” Every person in a community has a responsibility to protect and nurture the most vulnerable.

Is there anything you wish other people knew about SCAN?

SCAN is one of the best resources we have locally for supporting children, families, and the professionals who serve them. SCAN offers numerous free trainings each month, their programs are effective, and their mission benefits us all. SCAN is an essential part of the greater Richmond community.

What has been the best experience with SCAN so far?

I really enjoyed putting together an Eras Tour themed trunk with a fellow BYP member for Trunk or Treat at Hardywood last year. This event is a fundraiser for SCAN and was such a good time! I’m already planning my trunk for this year’s Trunk or Treat, but you’ll have to come to the event to see what it is.

Do you have any goals or hopes for the next year with SCAN? Is there anything coming up/happening in your work that you are excited about or want to share?

I had such a great experience on the BYP last year, that I was invited to join the Executive Committee and serve as the Vice Chair for the Programs Committee this year. I’m looking forward to coordinating our Holiday Shop which serves families who are connected to SCAN.

Professionally, I am so proud that my first supervisee is about to sit for her LCSW exam! This month, I started supervising a new cohort of future LCSWs who will deliver clinical services in local public schools.

Are you involved with any other community organizations, hobbies, or activities?

My monthly book club is approaching our 10 year anniversary and I am getting involved in my son’s school community. He just started Kindergarten so it’s all new and exciting.

What might someone be surprised to learn about you?

I read at least 100 books per year.
