Kasey George Steps Into Role of SCAN Board Treasurer

Kasey George joined SCAN's Board of Directors in 2023 and quickly became an engaged and valued part of the SCAN community. She has stepped into the role of Board Treasurer for SCAN's 24-25 year. We are thankful to have her expertise, diligence and kindness as part of the SCAN Board!

How did you first get involved with SCAN?

There is something to be said about the perfect time. I was out for my neighborhood run and had just been talking to my husband about finding another great organization to be involved with as I had recently ended my Board term with another organization. On my run, I ran into a former colleague, mentor who is on the board of SCAN and we both stopped our run, chatted a few minutes and SCAN was one of those topics. I knew about SCAN’s mission high level so that one run resulted in a conversation that would start me down the path of becoming more involved with SCAN. After initially meeting with Jeanine, I knew regardless of the role, SCAN was an organization I wanted to be involved with and support.

What has your life/work experience been that brought you to SCAN? What is your current role?

I just completed my first year on the board and starting now as the Treasurer. As a child I was in an out of a hospital a lot and beyond the love and care I received from my family, I remember my parents being an advocate for me – being a voice, as well as that special nurse or volunteer that just made my day through at times the simplest of tasks – a smile, stopping to check in on my coloring, etc. That left a lasting impression on me and has driven me to want to give my time back in various ways. In high school I volunteered consistently at the Ronald McDonald House, which followed me to my collegiate years of finding ways through other local organization in Blacksburg to give back to local families and then ultimately in Richmond. During the day as an accountant, I enjoy helping my clients problem solve, however, part of me always wanted to be able to help children/teach children/advocate for children and SCAN is a way that I can not only leverage those business skill sets, but to contribute to supporting children having their voices heard.

What inspires you to stay involved with your work at SCAN?

The first board meeting, I was instantly changed. Hearing about the vast reach SCAN has in our local community and the wonderful people that contribute their hearts and time each and every day to SCAN inspires me to continue to support SCAN.

What has been the best experience with SCAN so far?

Everything! From the progressive dinner to making “essential oil infusers” at the board meeting to learning about Circle Preschool at the Breakfast – each experience with SCAN is impactful.

Are you involved with any other community organizations, hobbies, or activities?

I am a proud Hokie and a mom of two loving, crazy boys, ages 8 and 6. I met my husband, Travis (also a Hokie), in Richmond. I love to start my day with a HIIT class or Run and on the weekends typically on a soccer field or basketball court being my son’s #1 fan.

CASA Program has Critical Need for Volunteers

Join our Fall CASA Training Class

SCAN's Court Appointed Special Advocates program is currently in need of volunteers to serve children in Richmond City and Petersburg.

There are over 62 children on our waitlist in need of a CASA.

CASA volunteers advocate for children who have been abused or neglected. They make sure the child’s needs are heard – in the community and in the courtroom – and serve as a caring, consistent adult in a child’s life. CASA volunteers are individuals from all walks of life who are willing to dedicate their time to looking out for a child’s best interests.
