How did you first get involved with SCAN?
I had noticed the blue and silver pinwheels around Richmond for years but wasn’t aware of their connection to SCAN. About six years ago, I mentioned them to a friend, who shared SCAN’s mission, her involvement on the board, and invited me to join the Progressive Dinner Planning Committee. Through that experience, I learned more about SCAN’s objectives while connecting with others who share a passion for advocating for children in our community.
What life/work experiences brought you to SCAN? What is your current role?
Throughout my years of volunteering, one constant has been my commitment to supporting children. I deeply believe that all children deserve a safe, loving environment in which to grow, learn, and thrive. Whether teaching financial skills, coaching an after-school program, or serving as a CASA in college, I have always valued building trust and connections with children.
As I learned more about SCAN, I saw how its mission aligns with my values and is actively put into practice every day. I am now a first-year SCAN board member, serving on the Real Estate and Program Committees. This role has given me insight into the care and thought put into SCAN’s environments and the impactful experiences it creates for children, families, and community partners.
What inspires you to stay involved with SCAN?
The people. Every interaction with the SCAN team leaves me impressed and inspired by their dedication, innovative approaches to care, and boundless energy to meet each new challenge.
Is there anything you wish more people knew about SCAN?
As I continue my learning journey, I am constantly amazed by SCAN’s extensive partnerships within the community. While its direct impact on children is well known, I wish more people understood the vital support SCAN provides to the court system, judges, legal professionals, schools, and daycare centers. Through its many free educational programs, SCAN also equips caregivers with knowledge and expertise that strengthen our entire community.
What has been your best experience with SCAN so far?
As part of board membership, we are encouraged to attend a court hearing with a CASA at least once a year. In February, I observed my first hearing since college, and it was a profoundly moving experience. Seeing the CASA, legal teams, the child’s family, and the judge collaborate to determine the best outcome for a young child was both challenging and inspiring. Witnessing these tough but essential decisions reinforced how crucial SCAN’s work is—it truly changes lives every day.
What challenges have you faced in your work with SCAN?
One challenge I face is succinctly explaining the breadth of SCAN’s programs! Whether it’s Circle Preschool, Family Support Programs, or Child Advocacy Centers, SCAN touches the community in so many ways. I’m still refining my two-minute elevator pitch—so if you have any tips, I’d love to hear them!
Do you have any goals or hopes for the next year with SCAN?
Like any community organization, securing funding to expand services is always a priority. I’m especially excited about our 23rd Annual SCAN Progressive Dinner on April 5th. Last year, we raised over $300,000 thanks to our generous donors and sponsors. This year, I hope to exceed that goal so SCAN can continue making an incredible impact in the community.
Are you involved in any other community organizations, hobbies, or activities?
You can often find me biking with my kids, watching college basketball with my husband, walking and playing tennis with friends—and I never pass up a good dance party!
