A letter from your Regional Team
Hello everyone,
Some SCBWI members may not know that every region is run entirely by volunteers, including the leadership team. All of the volunteers give their time and talents because they hold a deep passion for children’s literature.
In light of this fact, SCBWI Headquarters has asked all Regional Teams to take care of ourselves by nurturing our physical and mental well-being during these stressful times, and has specifically requested that we create official “office hours” to provide boundaries between our volunteer time and the fueling of our professional and creative careers. Because our Carolinas Regional Team members have varying schedules, strict "office hours'' aren't feasible for us.
However, our goal is to respond within 48 hours to inquiries we receive in our SCBWI inboxes. So if you have not heard from one of us within that time frame, please email us again. This will allow us to remain available, but in a manner that helps us stay fresh and able to serve. (Please note: If your inquiry is an emergency, please write “Urgent” in the subject line of your email.)
We thank you for your understanding, and we wish you all good physical and mental health at all times. Always.

August's Featured Illustrator:
Zoe Ranucci
Zoe has been a member of SCBWI since 2006.
I've always known I wanted to be in a creative career since I was a child. After attending the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, I went on to spend the next almost 10 years working as a graphic designer and an art director for an ad agency.
In 2002 I relocated to Charlotte, NC and became a full time freelancer and finally took the opportunity to start taking on illustrative projects. I have been happily self-employed for 18 years now, and I’m thrilled to say the bulk of my current workload is illustration and I have several children’s books under my belt.
I just finished illustrating my latest book with author, Dr. Kimberly P. Johnson, and am so very proud of it. It is called From A to Z With My Friends and Me and will be available later this fall. It’s amazing how, as artists, our style and skills morph constantly, we are always growing and improving (hopefully).
My goals and plans moving forward would to be keep growing and building upon those skills, especially with lighting and backgrounds, maybe write and illustrate a book of my own… who knows!
I have never had an agent or rep. I have always been fortunate enough to keep my schedule stacked with projects on my own, and have found a sweet spot working with self-published authors. That being said, I would not be opposed to taking on representation as I feel that could open up some new doors and opportunities for me.
I am obsessed with Character Design Quarterly by www.3dtotalpublishing.com. It is always packed full of inspiration and I love the in-depth interview with artists about their process. I also really enjoy
for digital artists.

Some Inspiring News From the World!

THEY'RE BACK!
NASA astronauts aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule splash down in the Gulf of Mexico
After two months on the International Space Station, NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley completed the first crewed flight of the Crew Dragon capsule.
This was the first time in the 59-year history of crewed American space travel that astronauts used the Gulf as a landing site.
This adds to their growing list of firsts that marked a new chapter in NASA’s human spaceflight program. Other items include the fact that this was the first launch of American astronauts into orbit from U.S. soil since the Space Shuttle was retired in 2011 and the first launch into orbit of humans on vehicles owned and operated by a private company.
This launch has served as a bright spot for America during these troubling times.
