The Character Equation: Or, How to Find Your Story's Heartbeat
All great stories have a heartbeat, the emotional core that engages readers so completely they forget to eat or sleep while reading. But how do you find it? In this session, we’ll do writing exercises to help you discover your story’s heartbeat and help it beat a bit stronger. We'll talk about what makes a story great versus just okay. Come with an open mind, prepared to experiment and play, and leave with excitement to write and new tools for your writer's toolbox.

Nora Shalaway Carpenter's most recent works include THE EDGE OF ANYTHING (a Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2020) and RURAL VOICES: 15 Authors Challenge Assumptions About Small-Town America (an NPR Best Book of 2020 and a JLG Selection). Our Book Fairies program is off to a great start! The purpose of this program is to support our PAL members by getting more of their books out into the Carolinas communities. Each month, our membership will be notified of new PAL member releases and asked to help out by contacting their local library systems, local bookstores, local schools, and other specialty locations that might be interested in a particular title. Thanks to PAL coordinator Derick Wilder and Carolinas author Tara Luebbe for all of their hard work getting this new initiative off the ground. We are excited about this new endeavor and look forward to celebrating the success of our SCBWI-C membership!
