The City of Somerville is accepting applications through August 3rd for a position on the Community Preservation Committee. CPA oversees the selection of projects to be recommended for funding by an estimated $2 million in annual Community Preservation Act (CPA) revenues.

While much of the focus on retaining the socioeconomic, ethnic, linguistic and racial diversity of Somerville is appropriately on ensuring affordable housing, this month's SCC eNews emphasizes the importance of ensuring a strong workforce development system as well.
With escalating housing costs, access to a good job is necessary to prevent displacement. You can read about the latest developments in the push for a comprehensive, adequately funded workforce development system in this issue.

SCC Deputy Director Meridith Levy writes, "Somerville is on the path of economic and job growth. Between 2005 and 2015, Somerville experienced a 24.5% growth in jobs, compared to 12.2% growth in the (rest of the) Metro North region."
But will Somerville's low- and moderate-income population occupy a prominent position in the City's economic future?

Four SCC members, including the president of our Board, recently drafted
an insightful piece that looks at why a targeted, well-funded workforce development initiative is a key component of fighting displacement in the City's neighborhoods.
"When we talk about displacement in Somerville, most people think about affordable housing. But as escalating housing costs far outpace incremental wage increases, it's obvious that access to a good job is as important to preventing displacement as access to stable housing." Read more.

On June 22, 2017, the Somerville Board of Aldermen unanimously approved Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone's request to appropriate and expend $50,000 from the Workforce Training Stabilization Fund for one year of funding for First Source Workforce Readiness programming.
