Director's Spotlight On. . . Next Year's Calendar
I appreciate the community’s patience with respect to getting a published copy of our 2019-2020 school year calendar. While the Board of Directors approved the dates at their March 2019 meeting, I was holding off putting out a “hard” copy until staff had an opportunity to debrief their thoughts on the advantages and challenges of the March conferences. I wanted to have agreement on the timing for next year so I could include that week on the calendar.

As you might expect, there were many perspectives on the benefits and challenges of the spring conferences. There was a strong consensus that the educators had a lot more substantive information and insights (academic and social/emotional) to share with families by having the conferences later in the year. As one educator put it, “Fall conferences seemed to be more for my benefit -- me getting to know the families. The Spring conference was definitely more about the learner.” The biggest challenge was not having more formal contact with parents until March.

The bottom line is that we need more time to discuss and problem-solve before we make the final decision on Conference Week. We will continue our discussion when we return from our Spring Break. So, still no published version of the calendar until the end of April (yes, more patience is required).

Until then, I thought it would be useful for families to have the key dates for their planning purposes. These are summarized below.

2019 – 2020 School Year Key Dates :
  • First day of school: August 22, 2019
  • Thanksgiving Break: November 25 – November 29, 2019
  • Winter Break: December 23, 2019 – January 3, 2020
  • February Break: February 17 – February 21, 2020
  • Spring Break: April 13 – April 17, 2020

Volunteer Help Wanted
If you can help with any of the following or have questions, please contact Melissa May .
  • Trail Weed Whacking: The end of the walking trail to school, where the trail meets staff parking, could use a little weed whacking. The grass is growing pretty high and it's becoming harder and harder for staff to see the younger learners as they drive around the corner. : We are getting towards the end of the school year, so if you haven't already logged your hours to date, please do. Use the link below for directions on both logging your hours and/or checking how many hours you have to date.
