Director's Spotlight On... Learning Everywhere
Dear Learners and Families:

We are very excited to welcome you back to school! Your educators are working very hard to set up our "Learning Everywhere" program for success. We have been building a virtual schoolhouse that will help you all feel welcome and part of the community. Although we cannot be together in person, we can continue to learn and grow together by using technology in creative ways.

Please join me on Monday night, August 17th at 6:30PM on Zoom (link forthcoming) for our Welcome Back Town Hall. Please remember to submit general questions ahead of time using this link. On Tuesday, your educators will communicate with you all the specific information you need to know for the first day of school on Thursday, August 20th.

This year we are all going to bravely try new things. We will learn from our mistakes and grow together, just like we always have. Whether in the virtual space or back on campus, we will continue to lean into the things that make us Charter. We will foster real-world problem solving and independent thinking, focus on individual learning trajectories, support families in being partners in education and connected as a community, and we will foster an inclusive, socially aware community where everyone is inspired and equipped to be advocates for themselves and for others. No matter where we are, we will come together to be successful because of who we are.

Thank you for being a part of our commUNITY!

Immunization Requirements
7th Grade:
If you have not already done so, please remember to turn in updated immunization records for your incoming 7th-grade learners. We need proof of their Tdap booster and second Varicella (chickenpox) shots before school begins. Please don't delay! You can email, fax (650-508-7341), or carrier pigeon them to the office anytime. Many thanks!

For Our Families of Rising Kinders and New SCCLC Families:
With COVID-19 on all of our minds, it is important to remember that ALL infectious diseases directly affect public health. The start of the school year is an important time for us to review our students’ immunization records so that we are ready when learners are allowed back on campus. The State of California has NOT changed the policy for immunization reporting, despite COVID-19. Please review the guidance we are required to follow at Please be on the lookout for an email from our office with more detailed information.

Board of Directors Update
Launching the BOD Antiracist Working Group
At the end of last year, the SCC Board of Directors recognized the need for a Resolution on Racial Equity. In order to create mechanisms to hold us accountable to this resolution, the BOD is starting an Antiracist Working Group.

The SCC Antiracist Working group will be responsible for understanding our current policies and vision in an antiracist context. The committee would be expected to analyze SCC’s current practices on racial equity in order to identify actions that could align our policies to the BOD resolution and would establish channels of communication between the learners, staff, and parents of SCC.

In order to be successful, members are expected to participate in substantial readings and discussions. The group will meet the last Monday of every month and will have clear goals and objectives.

This working group is not intended to be the sole mechanism for our school to become actively antiracist. Members of the SCC staff will work on developing our antiracist pedagogy, and a parent group will address how our whole community can become more actively antiracist.

More information will be provided about participation and membership. In the meantime, please visit this link.

SCEF Update
Thank you to our generous donors! Your donations will allow SCEF to grant over $3.3 million to support every San Carlos public school student in the upcoming 2020-21 school year. The SCEF grant to SCC is over $350,000 this year--amazing! As always, our grant will help fund educators—Emma (librarian), Marty & David (PE), Elena & Elia (Spanish)—and seminar instruction and materials. • A gracious and heartfelt thank you to Chris Tran, K-1 parent, who reached out to offer a gift of new, multicultural books to the classroom and made it seem like it was a favor to her to be able to do so!
  • Thanks in advance to Sarah Fama, Chris Tran and Jenn Fung for helping assemble the K-1 materials for distribution to the children!
  • The 3/4 team would like to express their sincere gratitude to the following classroom parents for helping to collate and create distance learning materials that will be sent home to learners: Chloe Bloom, Kelley Busjaeger, Norah and Matt Christmann, Jennifer Fung, Katherine Sherman, Dana Rechin, and Kelly Roberts. Many special thanks to Paige Hirsch for securing a welcome banner to hang when the learners pick up their materials. We appreciate this support very much!
