Director's Spotlight On... Learner Exhibitions
Learner Exhibitions are community-wide celebrations that are a wonderful opportunity to come together and celebrate the learners. Our first Learner Exhibition this year is scheduled for Thursday, February 13, 6:00pm – 7:30pm.

For those who have not had the opportunity to experience a Learner Exhibition, this is a kindergarten – 8th grade event, with all classrooms participating. Learner Exhibitions are not traditional open houses, which are primarily teacher-driven. Rather, they provide a chance for the learners to exhibit the projects they have been working on to an audience outside their classmates and educator. The exhibition looks different at each age level because the classrooms/grade levels may choose to exhibit different parts of their curriculum. There may be finished projects or products, or you may see works in progress. What you will see is a strong sense of learner effort and ownership in all classrooms.

Parents and families are welcome and encouraged to visit all the classrooms/grade levels. This is a great opportunity to see SCC learning across the grade levels and a unique opportunity to see our curriculum build over the 9-year span. You will have insight into what the learners are able to do at the different developmental stages and get a sense of how we build habits of mind, practices, and ideas in the different content areas. I really hope that you are able to block out your calendar so you can join us!

Please note: We ask that children be accompanied/supervised by an adult throughout the entire event. With the increase in our school population, the number of bodies on site during the Learner Exhibitions has dramatically increased. This kind of attendance is awesome! However, we need to keep safety in mind. With the stairways and dark spaces away from the lit buildings, chances increase that kids can get hurt, spooked, or separated from their parents. Educators are focused on their classroom and interacting with families and cannot be monitoring children’s behavior. Please help us keep everyone safe and enjoying the event by keeping your child in your sights during the evening.

Dancing Under the Stars
NO MORE of "An Evening Dancing Under the Stars???"
I'm looking for a Party Lead to replace me -- or a couple of Party Leads who plan and organize and delegate. I'll hand you our "turnkey" party template and Google sheet that maps out all the inventory and volunteer needs for the mid-September Dancing Under the Stars Parent Party.

You won't be alone. There are LOTS of people who jump in, embrace roles, take on responsibilities and make the party happen. I'll be around to help out. But it helps to have ONE person leading the charge, coordinating the various parent volunteers & teammates. Are you up for that? Let me know :)

Parent Education
Lorea Martinez , Parent Ed Liaison
Many parents have caught their children telling lies: sometimes small ones, other times not so small. Kids may be untruthful to push boundaries, get something they want or avoid getting into trouble. While it is common, we want to make sure we are teaching children to be honest and tell the truth. In this 2-minute video from the Greater Good Science Center, you can learn 3 science-based tips to nurture truthfulness in your child.

Save the Date! Our last parenting book club meeting is on Tuesday, March 3. We will be discussing The Yes Brain by Dan Siegel.

Coming up this week, you can learn about 7th grade sexual health education and learning and attention differences (Wed), and why liberal arts rule the digital world (Thurs). For details and other parent ed events, click on the button below. Happy Parenting!

Greater San Carlos Community Information
  • A BIG compost pile of thank you to Cindi Hunter, Ava Hristova, Lisa Nadiv, Paul Young, Allison and Carson Woo, Andrew McMahon and Patrick Viruel for spending your Saturdays building the Upper Garden. It's all coming together and we wouldn't be this far along without your dedication and support. And a big thank you to Cindi Hunter and Melissa May for heading the Upper Garden Team.
  • I would like to appreciate Ajit Dansingani for coming in on the weekend to adjust the standing desk heights in the 5-6 classrooms. It was a tedious job and I so appreciate the effort that went into it. With Appreciation, Elysha.
  • Team 3/4 would like to thank Kim Strickland for supplying our classrooms with library books for our reading unit.
  • Team 3/4 would like to thank the parents who chaperoned our CODS trip. They did an amazing job, without complaint, through three long days, late nights, and strenuous hikes. We are so lucky to have their support and could not have done this trip without them.
