Director's Spotlight On... Appreciation
Several years ago, staff began the practice of starting each of our meetings with appreciations. This is an informal time for people to express their thanks or appreciate another staff member(s) for something that they have done. This simple practice continues to build trust and collegiality among staff members. Appreciations are a regular part of classroom birthday celebrations and classroom meetings. Educators know that providing time for learners to speak positively to and about their peers is an important part of building a strong classroom community.

We continue to find ways to mirror this practice of appreciation within our parent and volunteer community. Think about all of the hours of volunteer time spent planning and working events, assisting in classrooms, managing and teaching seminars, organizing and driving on field trips, leading PRT and working as room representatives, writing and editing the newsletter, and serving on our BOD and other teams and working groups. Amazing, right?

I also encourage appreciation for the staff for all of the above-and-beyond work they do to make our milestone program possible. Hours are spent coordinating with the location, getting forms and medications accurate and submitted, and arranging the logistics of travel to and from. I especially want to appreciate them for supporting the learners while they are away from home. They are on 24 hours a day, and it is well beyond the scope of the Educator duties. They do this, however, because they believe in the program and are committed to learners having these amazing experiences. It is nice for them to know that this is seen and appreciated.

I encourage us to make it a practice to notice and appreciate contributions being made in all the different areas of CLC.

There is no one right way to do this. Here are some suggestions:
  • Every issue of our newsletter has Volunteer Appreciations included as a regular feature. Anyone can submit an appreciation to be included in the weekly newsletter by sending it to newsletter@scclc.net.
  • You could send an appreciation to a BOD member for them to note it during the Community Recognition section of their agenda.
  • Consider a quick shout-out on your class email list, or a face-to-face appreciation would also be welcome.

However you communicate your appreciation, know that these small acts of gratitude help stitch us together to create the whole cloth that is our community. I witness these acts every day and am so grateful that you all are part of SCC.

Health and Safety Note
We are staying abreast of the developing coronavirus epidemic and are receiving communications from the County Department of Health on a regular basis. We've been diligently working to disinfect our campus due to the influenza outbreak, and are assured that those same measures are currently sufficient.   However, if you or a family member has traveled to mainland China or other affected areas within the last 14 days, please let us know so that we can find substitutes for volunteer commitments if necessary for the time being.

Speaking of the Influenza outbreak, we have been seeing a reduction in new illnesses and really appreciate everyone's efforts to keep kids home and let them fight whatever's ailing them. We'll let you know when we're de-escalated by the County Department of Health.

Parent Education
Lorea Martinez , Parent Ed Liaison
Parents worry about their children. A lot. We worry about not giving them enough attention or giving them too much. We worry about their challenges, and the things that come too easy for them. We also worry about work keeping us from being the parents we want to be. But here’s the thing-- the research is clear about the ONE particular thing that has long-lasting effects for children: having a parent who can be counted on to “show up.” Showing up means bringing your whole being—your attention and awareness—into the moments you have with your child. To read more about the research and how to show up for your children, check out this article by Dan Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson.

Coming up this week, you can learn about neuroplasticity and the brain (Tue) and/or attend a KidPower event hosted at SCC (Sat). For details and more parent ed events, click on the button below. Happy Parenting!
