Director's Spotlight On... Campus Improvements
There were some really nice facility upgrades waiting for us when we returned to campus in the New Year! I wanted to share these changes with those of you who have not been on campus yet.

The first improvement was the completion of the resurfacing of the upper deck. As many of you may have experienced, the upper deck was incredibly slippery on dewy, rainy, and icy mornings. The new surface provides much more friction and is significantly safer (empirical evidence from subsequent wet mornings). Water is still pooling in some areas, but drains will be installed to alleviate this over February Break. Also during that break, stair tread nosings (yes, this is a thing) will be installed on the stair edges to mitigate the current slick edges.

I am also very excited to report that the perimeter fencing for the garden space was completed over break. This fence now encloses the future planting area, shed, compost bin, and greenhouse. While some learners are not happy with the lack of access to some of their “shop” areas, this fence will allow us to start with the bed construction and planting. It is very satisfying to see this space take shape. I want to express many, many thanks to Cynthia Hunter for all of her work in making our garden aspirations a reality (grant writing, project managing, labor, and more).

As part of a successful grant effort co-led by the ¾ team and Cindi Hunter, we have been able to purchase and install hand dryers in the restrooms. This is an effort to reduce the number of paper towels that we use. The funds from this grant also went towards the purchase and installation of a new bottle filling station that also includes a water fountain! The learners are super excited to have that option now.

Slowly but surely, we are making progress towards improving and building out this space to better serve our programs and learners. We are a work in progress…

PLEASE NOTE:  I rescheduled the California Dashboard workshop to Tuesday, January 28, 7:00 – 8:15 PM. I double booked myself on the original date ☺ I hope you can join me at this new time.

Parent Assistants for Vision & Hearing Screening:
The annual state-mandated Vision and Hearing Screening will take place January 27-31, 2020 for learners in Kindergarten, 2nd, 5th and 8th grades. In addition, 1st-grade boys will be screened for color vision deficiency.

SCC's school nurse consultant, Jessica Rosenberg, needs parent assistants to help "run" 5-10 kids at a time from PE to the screening location on campus and keep them quiet as their hearing and vision is assessed. Please sign up here: https://signup.com/go/TUazBmE

Party Lead for Dancing Under the Stars :
Happy New Year from Dancing Under the Stars. Hope you and your family had a lovely holiday break. My daughter will be graduating in June so I am looking to find a Party Lead: someone willing to help coordinate Dancing Under the Stars.

I have a detailed, tried & true roadmap/event plan for DUS -- a Google Sheet that we've used for the past 3 years. The event has also had a team of active, involved co-hosts providing stellar involvement, so I can help the transition to someone (or someones) willing to be the Party Lead(s).

Party tickets go on sale in mid-March, at SCEF's Gala Auction. So SCEF is looking to solidify the calendar of 2020 Parent Parties now.
If interested, please contact Christopher Kashap .

Wouldn’t it be nice if this year there was NO fighting in your home? It would be nice… but here’s the thing--fighting is inevitable in families. It does not mean that there is something wrong with your kids or your family, it’s just reality. There are, however, differences between fair and unfair fighting. Criticism, disdain or defensiveness don’t help with fair fighting. Empathy, responsibility and love do help with fair fighting. Check out this great article from Jennifer Miller, Author and SEL Family Consultant, to learn more and get the “Fighting Fair Family Pledge."

Remember to save the date! On January 22, CLC’s Behavior Specialist and Registered Art Therapist Sara Barulich, will be hosting the parent community for an “Art and Wine Parent Night." In this self-care session, you will learn the therapeutic value of creating mindful art through Zentangling. For more details and to RSVP, click here. Adults only.

Coming up this week, learn how unconscious bias shapes your behavior (Wed). For details and more parent ed events, click on the button below. Happy Parenting!
