SCC Weekly Newsletter: March 25 - 31, 2019
Director's Spotlight On... Fostering Your Own Education
During Conference Week, all focus was on learner growth. As you met with your child’s educator, you discussed areas of strength and opportunities for growth. One of the more powerful things that we can do as adults to support our children’s learning is to model growth and self-improvement ourselves. From learning to play an instrument or a second language as an adult to acknowledging and learning from our mistakes and fails – all are powerful ways to influence children’s attitudes about learning.

In this spirit, I am facilitating a parent book club this year. The topic of our second Parent Book Club book, The UnSelfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World by Michele Borba, is teaching our children to become empathetic. The book discusses specific habits that help develop empathy in children and concrete examples of how to do this. I was very interested in reading this book because I have always found teaching empathy to be very difficult. Our book group is meeting this week on Wednesday, March 27, from 7:00 – 8:30 PM, in the staff room. Anyone is welcome to join, even if you haven’t read the book.

In the same spirit, I wanted to appreciate Lorea Martinez for her commitment to our continuing parent education. Check out the list of opportunities that she curates each week for the newsletter down below. Lorea will also be sending out a survey asking parents about topics of interest to help us plan meaningful events. Finally, thanks to Lorea for arranging the Yoga and Mindfulness night last Tuesday for us all. We had a good turnout and I know that I certainly felt restored after participating.

Parent Education
Lorea Martinez , Parent Ed Liaison
Last week, we discussed the importance of helping girls say no with confidence. Let’s look at boys this week. What are some of the challenges boys experience? Research shows that boys, compared to girls, are four times more likely to be expelled from school and two times more likely to be in special education. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the third leading cause of death for boys. Some experts argue that young boys are hurting due to America’s narrow definition of masculinity. If you want to learn more, check out these two resources: The Mask You Live In and What Makes a Compassionate Man

Coming up this week, you can learn about the importance of movement (Mon), navigating boyhood (Tue), raising compassionate kids (Wed), and babies, bodies and boundaries (Thurs). For details and other events, click on the button below. Happy Parenting!
