SCC Weekly Newsletter: May 13 - 19, 2019
Happy Mother's Day!!

San Carlos Hometown Days is THIS WEEKEND!
Details on joining SCC in the parade can be found below.
Director's Spotlight On... The New Us
You all may have noticed the soft roll out of our new logo and mascot. I wanted to formally share the final visual products of a year+ of conversation, collaboration, and creation.
Our Logo
The rebranding group ( including especially the learners) emphasized that we really never use the “Learning Center” part of the name when we are referring to our school. We therefore made the decision to move from CLC to SCC.

Hopefully you all can see the letters SCC that make up the logo. Beyond that, there are many open interpretations of the figure that is formed. This open, changeable, and open-to-possibilities figure is consistent with our identity. I want to give a HUGE shout-out and thank you to Janet Brockett, owner and Creative Director of Elements Design Group, and our own Danny Schambach for the creation and execution of this professional and innovative design.
Our Mascot: A Pride of Lions
The high value that we place on community led the rebranding group to decide on a group of animals rather than a single animal. We work together, value our family and social groups, and look after each other. We have pride. We are the Pride.

Our new identity will have its public debut in the Hometown Days parade. We have our banners ordered and Gwynne set up a Threadless shop where you can buy school spirit. Show your Charter pride :)
Finally, if you have not yet completed the  Parent Satisfaction Survey , I encourage you to do so. I have decided to keep it open for one more week.
Board of Directors Update
Olin Palmer , on behalf of the BOD
And now for something completely different! (Even if some parts look
quite similar)

As Stacy’s Parent Satisfaction Survey is winding to a close, the board is preparing to conduct our annual Community Feedback Survey for the Executive Director .

The current survey winding down is information for Stacy’s use . The coming survey is confidential and for the Board’s use in conducting an annual review.

Keep a look out next week for a link to the Community Feedback Survey for SCC’s Executive Director. The link will be open for feedback for about two weeks. Details to follow.

Thanks! And as always, if you have any questions, please reach out to any current board members for further information.

Parent Education
Lorea Martinez , Parent Ed Liaison
Many times parents tell their children “Say you are sorry” when their child has made a poor choice. Although parents may be trying to teach the child a lesson, forcing kids to say sorry can have unintended consequences. For example, kids may learn to say sorry without thinking about the consequences of their actions or how the affected person is feeling. If you want some ideas for what to do instead, read this great article

Coming up this week, you can learn about learning differences (Tue), human trafficking (Wed), raising kids through divorce, and mothers & daughters (Thurs). For details and other events, click on the button below. Happy Parenting!

SCEF Update
Make It Happen In May!
While SCEF’s fiscal year ends in June, we are on a campaign to reach our fundraising goal by May 31st in hopes of minimizing budget reductions. If the School Board has the estimated SCEF Grant for the 2019-20 school year in June, they can consider this estimate in their final budget deliberations.

Check out our flyer with more information at: http://scefkids.org/scefday-2019

To understand how your donation to SCEF makes a difference to your child’s education, watch our video at: http://www.scefkids.org/2019video

Go to http://www.scefkids.org/donate to make your donation or add to your gift this year. Gifts of any size are appreciated and will make a real difference for our kids. If you are going to donate via payroll deduction with your employer, please act now as it can take up to 8 weeks for funds to be received by SCEF.
Thank you to our community!
A heartfelt thank you to our generous community for helping make SCEF Day an important part of our fundraising campaign, and Revel @ Devil’s a HUGE success. And, thank
you for your advocacy for public schools.

SCEF Concert at Hometown Days
Kick off Hometown Days with a free family concert and dinner at Burton Park. The concert featuring our middle schools’ music programs (and award winning jazz musicians) starts at
5pm. There will be a couple of food trucks, or you can bring your own food. Come enjoy the festivities!

June 14, 2019 is San Carlos Night at Oracle Park!

Appreciations
  • Girls on the Run coaches want to thank the entire SCC community for their support throughout our season! Specifically...THANK YOU to Gina Reidy for letting us use her classroom for our weekly after school meetings. THANK YOU to Sarah Rushing for being a girl's running buddy and selflessly giving her time on two weekends. Congratulations to all the GOTR girls for completing their 5k on May 5th at Crissy Field!
  • Deep appreciation to Jessica Rosenberg and Girl Scout Troop #62032 for assisting Gwynne with the gargantuan project of creating fully functional emergency backpacks and disaster supply duffels. We wrapped the project this week after two years of planning and follow-up, and it feels GREAT to have all our spaces outfitted with the supplies we hope we'll NEVER need! Thank you thank you thank you!
  • Thank you to Munazza Bukhari, Danielle DeBrier, Susan Levin, and Kripa Ghoman for chaperoning on the Room 222 Recology field trip!
