Director's Spotlight On... Keeping Our Foundation Strong
With the passing of Halloween, I think we can officially consider the school year well underway! I want to thank everyone in this amazing community for all of the ways you are contributing to SCC. You volunteer for seminars, milestones, field trips, classroom centers, school maintenance and beautification, and in countless other ways that support the learners and our program. Your participation in our SCC-based fundraiser (Chili Cook-Off) was epic this year! It was incredibly successful due to your participation and planning.

In addition to our own community’s efforts, we are fortunate to have a strong district-wide education foundation. The parent-led San Carlos Education Foundation (SCEF) raises funds each year that also help significantly to support SCC. Your donations to SCEF help fund our Spanish, PE and Library Educators, underwrite experiential learning opportunities (milestones and seminars, for example), and computers and other classroom technology. As you can see, the funds we receive from SCEF support essential SCC programs that enrich our learners’ everyday learning experience.

This Wednesday, November 6th is our first SCEF Day of the year. Our committed and amazing SCEF Representatives, Katherine Sherman and Kate Stromberg, always have something fun planned for that day. Staff will be wearing green in support and we encourage learners to do the same if they want.

If you haven’t already done so, I hope that you will consider making a donation to SCEF. Your support makes a big difference and is critical to help sustain and enhance the education we provide for our learners. You can learn more at www.scefkids.org.

Thank you all for your continued engagement in our community.

9th Annual Halloween Candy Buy-Back
Drop your excess pounds... I mean pounds of CANDY at the office from Nov. 1 through Nov. 6th and Drs Urmi Amin, Michael Chang, and Nancy Kaher will donate $1 per pound of candy received to SCEF! The candy will be shipped to the troops overseas as part of Operation Gratitude (courtesy of Estes Express Shipping) and is always VERY well received. This is a wonderful program, and we hope you'll get your kids involved in giving back! scefkids.org/halloween
Chili Cook-Off
Jailbreakin' Josh here... Hard to believe, but we had 800 people at Devil's Canyon and the best part of it is that we are done fundraising! That's right--we shut off the CheddarUp and we'll come in at our $100,000 limit with the generous corporate matching and for those of you who pledged to give (please don't forget).

Thank you all! What a community. Very special thanks to this dream team of a CCO leadership committee: Christopher Kashap, Tricia Lord, and Roberta Marks. Tricia and Christopher have 8th graders, so this is their last round of driving CCO. Please join me in wishing them the very best as they watch their kids move into high school (yikes!).

Parent Education
Lorea Martinez , Parent Ed Liaison
A growing body of research finds that a child’s ability to cope constructively with life’s ups and downs plays a key role in their academic and social success. Knowing how to deal with disappointment, asking for help, and resolving conflicts constructively are skills that can lead to better behavior on the playground and better focus in the classroom. And parents play a key role in teaching these skills to children--it requires that we label and express our emotions, and regulate them in positive ways. For more details, check out this great article

Coming up this week, the San Carlos School District kicks off a parent series, The Nurtured Heart Approach. It will take place every Tuesday from Nov 5 until December. Also this week, you can learn about how mobile devices affect families (Mon), everything you wanted to know about the brain (Tue), and sex, bullying and social media (Thurs).
