CONGRATULATIONS NORTHERN NEW JERSEY 0N 75 YEARS!! 1950-2025!

Stories, Past and Present, from our Northern New Jersey Region

This month’s story is from the NNJR October 1986 Pole Position titled “Vintage Fall Festival at Lime Rock Park” author unknown, photos by J. De Luca.

“The old cars came to Connecticut to race, to show off, and to swap parts. If you had a keen eye, or a keen sense of history, you probably recognized the cover photo as the 1930 Riley……It sits amid heaps of odd parts that are for sale, a peculiar mixture of grandeur and garbage. Such was the flea market. I felt like some scruffy squatters had taken over the old paddock; there were Austin Healey parts spread out where I usually park my race car near station 2 at Big Bend. Nerve! Vendors selling T-shirts, books, pins, paraphernalia and holograms (no joke) added to the carnival atmosphere. This is where old car nuts go when they die.

I was slightly pleased that my old bomb, 25 years old next month, made the 150 mile trip without incident, but even more surprised to see the really old race cars performing like the day they were pulled out of the crate at Sebring.

There were D-jags chasing Porsche RSK’s, Allards displayed their bizarre positive front camber when they hotfooted through Big Bend with the front wheels splayed out. The venerable BMW’s, forerunners of today’s popular sports sedans, acquitted themselves nicely in front of the event’s sponsor, BMW of North America.

This is truly one of Lime Rock’s best events. Don’t miss it next fall!”

Jumping to present day and celebrating 43 years……August 29-September 1, 2025 marks the 43rd Lime Rock Historic Festival. The weekend will start on Thursday with a 17 mile tour through the area followed by Thursday’s Vintage Race Car and Sports Car Parade. Friday, Saturday and Monday feature non-stop vintage car competitions. Sunday will be reserved for the Lime Rock Concours and Gathering of the Marques display with cars lined up all around the track. In addition, there are speakers, concessions and more. It is worth a visit whether you go for the weekend or for a single day. Information is available on the Lime Rock website. Don’t miss it this fall!

May 4th, 2025

Start Location:

Subaru World of Hackettstown

        364 Rte 46 W, Hackettstown, NJ 07840

Price: $35/$45 per vehicle

This is a 75 mile straight forward Tour Rally with easy-to-follow instructions. The event will start at Subaru World of Hackettstown and end at Tiptons Tavern, Phillipsburg, NJ. The rally is designed so that newcomers to the sport can easily complete the course with all turn instructions supported with official mileage and associated Car Zero 'Key Times'.

Participants will check-in at Subaru World of Hackettstown 10:00 and 10:45 to receive their route Instructions which will include turn-by-turn directions, before setting out in their personal vehicles to drive the route. The rally will conclude at approximately 3:30 p.m.

This is a "Tour" type rally and there are no traps or tricks - just drive, enjoy the great roads and marvelous scenery and try to arrive at each checkpoint at precisely the right time. Checkpoints will be set up along the way to monitor how well you are following the assigned average speeds. Awards will be presented to the teams who do the best job of arriving at the checkpoints at the proper times. This is a rally designed especially for people with little or no rally experience.

For those wishing to compete for SCCA National RoadRally Series points a Divisional event will be offered, for those looking to enjoy an afternoon of friendly competition the Regional event is for you.

The Richta GPS checkpoint system is free to use and will record your arrival time at each checkpoint. You'll keep this app open while you run the rally and it will use the GPS signal from your device to record your arrival time at each checkpoint. Once you pass a checkpoint, the app will automatically calculate your score for that checkpoint and announce it to you! No more waiting for the end of the rally to see how you did. You'll see your score at each checkpoint as you go along.

General Instructions and details about the Richta Smartphone App will be emailed to all registered contestants 1 week prior to the event.

Sinkholes and Iron Mines

New Jersey has 588 abandoned mines, with a median age of 160 years old.

From pre-Revolutionary times through the 1980s, the ore and minerals contained in our corner of the planet have shaped our history. Mining is the basis for a major contribution from Northwest New Jersey to modern American society. From the first established settlements in the Musconetcong River Valley the iron working communities were the most durable. Forges and foundries were the economic engines of the time, places that saw remarkable events. (click on map to view details)
