CONGRATULATIONS NORTHERN NEW JERSEY 0N 75 YEARS!! 1950-2025!
Stories, Past and Present, from our Northern New Jersey Region
This month I will be sharing two Pole Position stories.
The first story is from the September 2003 Pole Position, titled “Dear Northern New Jersey Region of the SCCA and Lime Rock Park” written by Bob Bacon, SCCA Member #300694, Arizona Region.
“I recently participated in a regional race weekend put on by your club at Lime Rock Park, and I am writing to thank everyone involved for this wonderful event. My car and I arrived at Lime Rock mid Thursday afternoon after a 4,000-mile driving/racing working odyssey across the US from Phoenix, Arizona. I’ve only been racing for a few years. I got a late start after taking three years to design and build a car that turned out to be a Super Production over three liters. I drove the silver and yellow “Cobra” in Group 3.
The friendly Lime Rock Staff greeted me with an explanation of the 20,000-lb bridge limit and an offer to escort my over-weight 72 foot rig to the paddock. I backed awkwardly into the parking field near the entry expecting a long wait. My escort arrived within minutes. After a friendly explanation of where we were going and why, we entered the track near West Bend and proceeded counterclockwise around the track, down the uphill, backwards through the esses then right through the left hander. I knew immediately that I was going to enjoy this track.
Having arrived early Thursday afternoon, I had plenty of choices where to paddock. Dave Brano of Snapdragon Motorsports had suggested that Paddock ‘B’ was quiet and more park-like. After a slow loop around both paddocks, we found a level and dry pull-through in the grass at Paddock ‘B’, and I thought to myself, ‘now THIS is truly a motorsports Park.’ As we were setting up, we were visited by staff, race officials and other racers who were all anxious to welcome us, give us tips about the layout and schedule and answer questions…………..
I don’t know if all of the organizations that run at Lime Rock are as well organized as the Northern New Jersey SCCA, but despite the sound limits, hours of operation, threat of rain and over three hundred participants, your club conducted the most well run event I’ve ever attended……….
It occurred to me later that no one associated with the track or the club seemed to be on a power trip, everyone seemed to be intent on enjoying the weekend of racing. I didn’t finish my race as well as I had hoped but I sure had a great time. I would like to express a special thanks to Vinny Blancuzzi, the best ambassador a club could ever have, and to Steve Savino, the class of SPO, who was kind enough to show me the line at Lime Rock and offered to do the same at The Glen. Thanks to everyone involved - you epitomize the spirit of club racing!”
The second story is a short story from the September 1991 Pole Position titled “The Drop Dead Rally A Night To Howl” Author unknown.
“Coming this fall to RVSCC’s rally and party of the year - the 25th DROP DEAD HALL-O-WEEN RALLYE. Rallymaster George Lapinsky will again orchestrate this year’s event. With a spooky-good rally, costume contest, fun games and prizes, he may have something special for this, our SILVER BULLET (for the beast) EDITION.
After a short 50-60 mile rally to answer questions of ghouls and goblins around the area’s best known cemeteries and spooky hollows, the gang ends at a local pub for food, grog, awards, trophies and festivities until?? Costumes (not required) are from the sublime to unbelievable, even the cars may be in costume! Also, traditional games like counting jelly beans, guess the weight of the pumpkin or bobbing for apples.
All members should attend this festival of darkness and support George by helping at the start or manning one of his ‘torture checkpoints’ - as much fun (for sadists) as running the event!
Reserve Saturday October 19th, 1991 for a ‘bloody’ good time. Scheduled to start at 6:00PM from STS, Rt 22 E., Green Brook, NJ, register early to ensure your ‘plot’ for a fun evening in the deep dark woods! Entry is $15, $13 pre-registered (+member discounts). Call George…or Barb….BE THERE OR BE SQUARE!”
