President's Message
Eric Goodwin, MAI, President
South Carolina Chapter Appraisal Institute

Happy New Year from the South Carolina Chapter of the Appraisal Institute. I hope everyone finished 2019 on a high note and are anticipating a promising new year. I am excited to be working with a great group of individuals on the board and looking forward to the opportunity to serve this organization.

The chapter has been blessed with a long line of dedicated members who have taken the time to build it into an organization for which we can be proud. My hope for the new year is that you will not only be encouraged to attend and participate in our chapter meetings and educational offerings but that you will be inspired to join the ranks of our future leadership. As we are constantly reminded, our profession is getting older and it is a challenge to find those who may be  interested in beginning the apprentice process. It is imperative that we step out of our offices and network with others in our field to brainstorm and find solutions that not only advance our organization but our profession , as well.

The chapter is fortunate to have several members who are filling roles with the national organization . Jody Bishop, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS will be serving as national Vice President in 2020 and is in line to become President in 2022, while Rob Elliott, MAI, SRA is slated to begin serving on the national board of directors beginning in 2020.

Based on your support of our educational offerings over the past few years, we can offer an educational voucher of $50.00 for the second straight year to chapter members who attended a SC Chapter sponsored educational program in 2019. You will receive an email with a discount code soon. I would encourage you to take advantage of this credit. It is a renewal year so I am confident that you will join us for the educational offerings we have planned:

  • What's Up in Technology for Real Estate Appraisers, Jan. 16, 2020 (Columbia)
  • 3rd Annual State of SC Economic Summit, Jan. 17, 2020 (Columbia, SC)
  • 2020-2021 USPAP Update, Feb. 20, 2020 (Columbia, SC)
  • ½ day seminar to be determined, April 16, 2020 (Columbia, SC)
  • How Tenants Create or Destroy Valuation, April 17, 2020 (Greenville, SC)
  • 2020-2021 USPAP Update, May 14, 2020 (Columbia, SC)
  • Business Practices & Ethics, May 15, 2020 (Columbia, SC)
  • Artificial Intelligence, AVMs, and Blockchain:  Implications for Valuation, July 16, 2020 (Pine Island Club, Columbia, SC)
  • ½ day seminar to be determined, fall 2020 (location to be determined)

The Annual State of SC Economic Summit has become a popular feature on the calendar, as it addresses relevant topics that we use daily.

The chapter not only provides continuing educational opportunities, but we are also an advocate for our profession at the state house. If you have not done so already, I ask that you please respond to the survey that was sent in November addressing the potential for Evaluations.

As your President, I welcome your comments and suggestions for ways our chapter can improve our member services.

AIRELIEF

The Appraisal Institute Education and Relief Foundation (AIERF) was born out of the 2018 union of the AI Education Trust  and AI Relief Foundation in order to most effectively and efficiently serve real estate appraisal professionals now and into the future.

For more than 50 years, the Appraisal Institute Education Trust (AIET) fostered the advancement of the real estate appraisal  profession and played a critical role in supporting valuation education. AIET supported a vast range of initiatives, from  world-renowned resources such as the Y.T. and Louise Lee Lum Library, to programs that will help secure the future of the valuation  industry, including research grants and scholarships.

Since the formation of the Appraisal Institute Relief Foundation (AIRF) following the 2005 Gulf Coast hurricanes, more than $300,000  in emergency financial assistance has been provided to appraisers and other individuals in need.

Looking to the future, the AI Education and Relief Foundation will continue to seek opportunities to support and promote the profession  of real estate valuation and the individuals who comprise the profession.
