President's Message
Trey Sedalik, MAI
Happy New Year from the South Carolina Chapter of the Appraisal Institute. I hope everyone has had a wonderful time with friends and family over the holidays and you all are ready for a great 2022! Our chapter has been fortunate to have such great leadership in the past, guiding us through challenging times by adapting and evolving. Thank you to our Board of Directors, and especially Sarah Guthrie, MAI, for your outstanding service and guidance as Chapter President in 2021! This year we hope to continue to grow toward our mission of empowering valuation professionals by providing community, education, and a place (virtual or real) to share the body of knowledge, gain credentials, and maintain the highest ethical standards.

We will be rekindling our strategic plan in 2022, with the primary goal of encouraging more chapter involvement and greater, more diverse participation. I believe this starts with education. Our education committee, chaired by Ben Hays, MAI, is working diligently on new and valuable offerings. We hope to expand our outreach to as many licensees in SC as possible by directly inviting and incentivizing them to take our education. We’ve only had around 250 contacts of the roughly 2,700 SC licensees receiving notices of chapter events and education. Suzanne and staff now have a list of all SC licensees and are working to expand our email list.

I encourage you all to attend meetings, take education and continue to strive to advance our profession. Reach out to your colleagues and invite them to join you at the next Appraisal Institute event. Pick up the phone or send a quick note. I hope to see as many of you as possible this year, in person or online.

We’re starting the year off with our 1st Quarter 2022 Chapter Meeting on January 20, 2022 at the Graduate Hotel in Columbia. During this meeting, Suzanne and Lee Parker, MAI, have planned a Celebration of Life Ceremony for Ralph Griffin, MAI, AI-GRS. Vince Dowling, MAI, SRA, will be teaching two seminars,

1. Nuances of Valuation: Cornerstone of Market Valuation and
2. Inconsistency: It’s hiding in Plain Sight in Your Appraisal.

We are also working to schedule:

·        The Paperless Real Estate Appraisal Office: 10 Years Later
·        Fair Value, Market Value, Fair Market Value (dark stores)
·        Desktop Appraisals (Bifurcated, Hybrid and Evaluations)
·        USPAP Update
·        Business Practices and Ethics
·        State of SC Economic Summit, 2022
·        Historic Preservation (Façade) Easements: Appraisal Techniques and Valuation Issues (New!)

Congratulations to Jody Bishop, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS who officially serves as national President as of January 1, 2022. We are fortunate to also have Rob Elliot MAI, SRA serving on the Board at the national level, most recently chairing the Strategic Planning Committee. Their leadership is a tremendous resource for this chapter’s members.

Our membership is privileged to have an anonymous $5,000 donation that will be used for candidate scholarships. The donor is hoping this will be an impetuous for more contributions. More details to come!

This chapter exists for its members. We will only get out of it what we put into it. There are several committee openings. Please reach out ASAP if you can contribute. I look forward to serving as President this year and welcome your feedback, suggestions, and any input you may have.

Best regards,

Trey Sedalik, MAI
2022 Chapter President
