700 Mangroves Planted at Restoration Site

SCCF's Coastal Watch recently partnered with MANG and volunteers from Captains for Clean Water to plant 700 mangroves at Black Skimmer Island in San Carlos Bay. Coastal Watch and MANG each provided red and white mangroves for the planting, which helped restore and replace mangroves that were badly damaged by recent hurricanes.

Red Tide

On 10/31/25, the FWC reported that the red tide organism, Karenia brevis, was observed in 23 samples collected along Florida’s Coasts. In Southwest Florida over the past week, K. brevis was observed at background concentrations in one sample collected from Pinellas County and one sample collected offshore of Lee County. In Northwest Florida over the past week, K. brevis was observed at background to high concentrations in Bay County and medium to high concentrations in Gulf County. Along the Florida East Coast over the past week, K. brevis was observed at background concentrations in one sample from Flagler County.

Wildlife Impacts

In the past week, the CROW wildlife hospital on Sanibel admitted 3 patients for suspected red tide/toxicosis: 1 adult laughing gull (deceased), 1 adult Wilson’s plover (deceased) and 1 adult great blue heron (still in care).

Blue-Green Algae

On 11/3/25, sampling for cyanobacteria by the Lee County Environmental Lab reported no visible cyanobacteria across all sites.

On 11/2/25 satellite imagery of Lake Okeechobee showed the presence of an algal bloom but cloud cover and winds prevented an area from being determined. The previous measurement of the bloom from 11/1/25 covered about 140 square miles, or 30% of the lake.
