Chiquita Lock One Step Closer to Removal, Despite Environmental Concerns

The Chiquita Lock, which has been broken since Hurricane Ian, was engineered to send polluted canal water through mangrove wetlands to be filtered rather than flow directly into the Caloosahatchee Estuary. Red Tide

On 6/7/24, the FWC reported that the red tide organism, Karenia brevis, was not observed in samples collected statewide over the past week.

The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) received 0 birds with toxicosis symptoms (from red tide or blue-green algae) from 6/4/24 - 6/10/24.

Blue-Green Algae

On 6/10/24, sampling for cyanobacteria by the Lee County Environmental Lab reported moderately abundant Dolichospermum, Microcystis and cyano filaments at the Alva Boat Ramp as streaks. Dolichospermum, Microcystis, Aphanizomenon and cyano filaments were moderately abundant upstream of the Franklin Locks as streaks with accumulation along the Lock and present at the Davis Boat Ramp as streaks.

On 6/10/24, satellite imagery from Lake Okeechobee showed the presence of an algal bloom but cloud cover and wind prevented the area from being determined. The previous area of the bloom measured on 6/8/24 covered 300 square miles (64%) of the Lake.
