Lake Okeechobee Levels & Caloosahatchee Flow Impacts

On 7/5/23 Lake Okeechobee was at 14.69 feet, increasing by 0.08 feet in the past week. The weekly average flow at S-79 was 3,603 cfs (cubic feet per second) and flow from the Lake at S-77 was an average of 97 cfs. The 14-day average flow at S-79 was 3,332 cfs and has been in the damaging flow envelope (2,100 - 2,600 cfs) for 7 days.

Photo was taken on 7/3/23 at 1:21 PM on a high tide (3.4 ft). The 14-day average flow at S-79 was 3,255 cfs.

Red Tide

On 6/30/23, the FWC reported that over the past week the red tide organism, Karenia brevis, was observed at background concentrations in one sample from Pinellas County.  

The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) received 2 birds with toxicosis symptoms (from red tide or blue-green algae) from 6/27/23 - 7/3/23.

Blue-Green Algae

On 7/6/23 sampling for cyanobacteria by the Lee County Environmental Lab reported the presence of Microcystis as visible specks at the Alva Boat Ramp with no accumulation, at the Davis Boat Ramp with slight accumulation along the seawall, at North Shore Park with some accumulation along the shore and seawall, and at Midpoint Bridge Park as light streaks.

On 7/5/23, satellite imagery from Lake Okeechobee showed high bloom potential in Lake Okeechobee covering approximately 368 square miles (53%) of the Lake.

Of the 58 samples collected, cyanobacteria was dominate in 35 samples, 36 samples had toxins present ranging from 0.25 to 210 μg per L (does not include non-detects) which is above the EPA recommended standard for recreational waters (8 µg per L).
