"Write the vision, and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it."
Habakkuk 2:2

SCCS provides "a classical education that couples spiritual vitality with engaged students, exceptional staff, and robust programs in a well-designed learning environment supported by strong fiscal management and committed donor development."

This is the long-term SCCS vision. To help us achieve this vision, the SCCS Board and Administration have set four goals or areas of focus for this current year. They include:

- Raising the Academic Bar
- Increase the focus on Spirituality
- Principal/Faculty/Board Development
- Development (Capital, Operations & Scholarships)

If you look closely, you will see that these goals spring directly from the SCCS vision. The SCCS Board and Administration are now working to set specific goals and milestones to help us achieve these larger goals for the year. Hopefully, you have noticed and will continue to notice changes that are directly related to this strategic approach to achieving our school's mission. Please know that your school leadership is planning for the future all while maintaining academic standards, ensuring spiritual vitality, and developing our staff. Now let's run...

In Him,
Dr. Marshall

Don't Worry!

Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. (Phil 4:6 MSG)
                          ___________________________

Th e school years are a battleground for the hearts and minds of our children. But Fern Nichol's, MIP's founder, reminds us that Satan trembles when he sees the weakest saint on her knees - for he knows he has no power against our prayers that are prayed according to God's will. What more important investment can you make into your
children's lives than to pray for them?

MOMS IN PRAYER - starting back SOON!

Come join us as we start our 10th year
of praying for our children, teachers and school -
we meet for one hour, once a week
- no experience required!
No refreshments, no homework, no dressing up -
just come as you are and pray.
And whether your prayers
are silent or spoken,
God hears!!

Watch email this week for scheduling & start dates!
Groups have most often met right after drop off at Penn Ave campus (8-9) and at our Christ Fellowship preschool campus (8:30-9:30).
Groups/schedules vary yearly so stay in touch as decisions are made.
Rooms, leaders and schedules for 2017 are being firmed up now.

From the Grammar School Principal

Dear SCCS Families,

We have had a wonderful 1st full week of school. The students have already accomplished so many things and have much more to look forward to. Our wonderful little Kindergartners learned about Noah and made beautiful rainbows. While learning about their senses, they were able to touch a braille book. The study of their family trees and community helpers are yet to come. First grade has been working on their Native American portfolios and had a marvelous time doing watermelon science with the second graders. First grade will be starting Shurley Grammar using an "Object Jar". Doesn't that sound fun! Our second graders just finished presenting a timeline of their lives. They are extremely excited to begin their studies of Ancient Egypt this next week. The third graders have finished up their study of the Solar System. If you ask a third grader their favorite activity about the Solar System they may mention something about toilet paper. They will begin their study of the Trojan War and before you know it we will be enjoying their Greek Feast. The fourth grade is enormously excited about the Bug Project coming up in two weeks as well as making Viking Ships next week. And, the seniors of Penn Ave, the fifth graders, have experienced their first park day and had a wonderful time eating and learning about heat transfer. The fifth grade team of teachers are working on teaching the students team work and godly character by creating an activity called Survivor Challenge. They work in groups, can earn points or have points taken away all to help them learn how to work with others in a productive and godly way. As you can see it has been an eventful week here at the Penn Ave. campus. We are looking forward to the many more adventures yet to come.

Please remember, you are more than welcome to stop in or call me if you need anything.

Serving you in Christ,
Rebecca Whitecotton
Grammar Principal

From the Principal's Pen

This week I wanted to specifically address parents of 11th graders. I have been working closely with Pinecrest High School to arrange for our 11th graders to take the PSAT/NMSQT. It is scheduled for October 11. Unfortunately, this is the only day really offered for juniors to take this test.

This is an important test for 11th graders. Although it is not used to determine college admissions like the SAT or ACT does, a good score on the PSAT matters. Receiving a good score can qualify a student for the National Merit Scholarship. Becoming a National Merit Scholar can provide the student monetary awards towards college. Good scores can also leverage the student to secure additional scholarships. I have personally had students in the past that have become National Merit Scholars and they have received full tuition scholarships to the schools of their choice.

Good scores on the PSAT can also be a good indicator of how a student will do on the SAT or ACT. The PSAT is a great primer for these tests. It helps familiarizes students with what to expect on these college placement tests, which will boost their confidence and lesson their anxiety when they schedule themselves to take one of them.

The cost for taking the PSAT at Pinecrest High school will be $16.00. (Checks should be made out to PHS.) The testing site will be at the Pinecrest High School and testing will start at 8:30 AM. Any SCCS 11th grader that is going to take the test should notify me by August 31. Any 10th grade student is also welcome to take the PSAT as well, but for 10th graders it would be considered a "practice" and will not count towards qualifying for the National Merit Scholarship. More information will be coming home with students in 10th and 11th grade in the near future. For now, students and parents of these two grades should mark their calendars, and 11th grade students should especially take advantage of this opportunity to take the PSAT on October 11. Please contact me with any questions.

Sincerely,
Mr. Zimmerman
Logic/Rhetoric Principal
