Launched in SCCT's 10th anniversary year, the Gold Medal Award recognizes outstanding leaders who have made landmark contributions to the field of cardiovascular CT and to the Society. The award recognizes SCCT members who best exemplify leadership and a lifetime commitment to clinical excellence, research and education.
The 2016 recipient of the Gold Medal Award is Matthew J. Budoff, MD, FSCCT.
Dr. Matthew J. Budoff is a Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA as well as the Endowed Chair of Preventive Cardiology and
Director of Cardiac CT at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, CA.
Dr. Budoff is a national expert on Coronary Artery Calcification (CAC) and CT Angiography, as well as a recognized leader in the development of CAC Scoring. He is an innovator in the non-invasive objective detection methods for cardiac disease, including groundbreaking work on the application of calcium scoring to patients at-risk for cardiac events. He is an investigator in many large pharmaceutical trials and multicenter studies funded by the National Institutes of Health.
After graduating from of the University of California at Riverside, he earned his medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine. He then completed his internship and residency in internal medicine, as well as his cardiology fellowship, at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
Dr. Budoff served as SCCT President from 2010-2011 and is currently the SCCT Membership Committee Chair. In previous years, he has served as the Chair of the Annual Scientific Meeting Planning Committee. He was a Founding Member of SCCT and continues to be a valued leader in the field and the Society.
Dr. Budoff's research is devoted to advancing procedures that assist with early identification of cardiovascular events and progression of coronary calcium in high-risk patients. Such early detection allows patients to be placed on the correct therapeutic path to prevent a heart attack. Additionally, Dr. Budoff's research focuses on maximizing the utility of non-contrast CT scans of the heart. He has published over 250 articles, book chapters, and books on these topics.
Dr. Budoff will be honored at the SCCT2016 Awards Reception on Friday, June 24 from 6:15 pm - 7:45 pm. The event will also highlight 2016 SCCT Industry Partners and feature cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Space is limited,
