Name: Melanie Medina

Pronouns: She/Her

Smith graduation year: 2010

Smith house: 150 Elm (which I hear is getting a name?!)

Job: Librarian, U.S. Department of State

I’ve lived in the DMV for: 2006–2008; 2011–today

DMV neighborhood: Rosedale, DC

How I work to make the world more inclusive and equitable: I like to think that I started this work when I was quite young and optimistic, and that Smith gave me the tools and language to operate on an entirely different level, helping to keep my optimism alive. My Smith experience was greatly shaped by my advisor, Dr. Ginetta Candelario. She gifted me many lessons – I remain in awe of her! – the most memorable of which was, "Guilt is an unproductive emotion." The blue index card where I scribbled her words reminds me that I should never hold myself back; my energy is much better spent carrying people with me, so we can break walls down together from the inside. I think she would be very proud of me.

Words of encouragement: At this point, we need a lot more than encouragement.

A note on the photo: This was the last photo of me pre-Covid – enjoying a week in Nashville at a conference with a dear friend – and I am so glad to have captured that joy!
