We began our unit on reducing, reusing and recycling in October and when our families found out they began helping us recycle boxes, tubes and containers in our classroom. One parent, Jennifer Williams, visited our classroom with her worm composting box and her red wiggler worms. She taught us how she started worm composting, how to take care of it and what they eat. In addition to learning how to compost using worms she also told them how the worms help our earth, by using the worm castings, turning scraps of food and leaves into nutrient rich compost to help gardens grow and how they can be used around our plants. Students were able to touch the worms, seeing several different sizes including a few baby worms. We saw that the youngest worms were almost see through and could see that they had eaten. Each student took a turn to feed the worms “brown food”, which is leaves, tore up cardboard and paper that helps keep moisture down in the dirt. We learned that the worms regulate the population based on how much food they have. Our class is so thankful for our parents’ involvement in our classroom.
