Jack Potter: Art Student of the Month

Jack Potter was selected for artist of the month because he always has creative ideas. Even when he is not at school, he spends his time in his room making 3D models using paint and wood. He is always searching for a new art project that he hasn’t tried and is not afraid of making mistakes while learning how to achieve his artist goals. He is always open to criticism and uses feedback to his advantage in order to succeed creatively!

Rock Springs Pre-K Learns About Composting

We began our unit on reducing, reusing and recycling in October and when our families found out they began helping us recycle boxes, tubes and containers in our classroom. One parent, Jennifer Williams, visited our classroom with her worm composting box and her red wiggler worms. She taught us how she started worm composting, how to take care of it and what they eat. In addition to learning how to compost using worms she also told them how the worms help our earth, by using the worm castings, turning scraps of food and leaves into nutrient rich compost to help gardens grow and how they can be used around our plants. Students were able to touch the worms, seeing several different sizes including a few baby worms. We saw that the youngest worms were almost see through and could see that they had eaten. Each student took a turn to feed the worms “brown food”, which is leaves, tore up cardboard and paper that helps keep moisture down in the dirt. We learned that the worms regulate the population based on how much food they have. Our class is so thankful for our parents’ involvement in our classroom.

Holston Elementary First Graders Learn About Pumpkins

Holston Elementary's 1st Grade had a seed to pumpkin study. We read the book "From Seed to Pumpkin" by Wendy Pfeffer and learned about the different parts and the life cycle of a pumpkin. Students described the inside and outside of pumpkins and wrote about them. They had the opportunity to help scoop out the seeds and insides of the pumpkins. We counted the seeds by grouping them into five groups. We completed our study at Fender's Farm where each student was excited to receive both a pumpkin and gourd to take home for their families to enjoy.

What a great time we had while learning all about pumpkins!

Bluff City Elementary Veterans Day Program

Bluff City Elementary School held a school-wide Veterans Day program this week. Sullivan East High School's Major Fain, and members from his Jr ROTC, performed the "presenting of the colors" and the "passing of the flag" to the student body. Several fifth graders also presented from the stage and led the student body in song. It was a wonderful presentation in which much respect was shown!
