At the beginning of the school year, third grade students told stories by writing about assigned various topics. Now Mrs. Cox is introducing the art of oral storytelling. Students were given puppets and told that they could use various items in the library to create or retell a story. One group decided to retell their own version of The Three Little Pigs. Another group told nonfiction facts about their animal puppets. There were fiction stories, as well as a story that included puppets trying to get to the North Pole to see Santa! While some of the students did write down their stories, most of the students told it by memory! Afterwards, students discussed dialogue, nonfiction vs. fiction, setting, characters, and the tradition of oral storytelling. Mrs. Cox, as always, is proud of her students for being so creative and never being afraid to be themselves in the library. |
