U.S. Economic Development Administration Reauthorized After 20 Years |
For the first time in 20 years, the U.S. Congress has reauthorized the Economic Development Administration (EDA), which is crucial for boosting economic growth in communities across the country. This bipartisan effort aims to update the EDA, which has played a key role in funding infrastructure, creating jobs, and supporting disaster recovery since 1965.
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo stated that this reauthorization will help the EDA continue to provide the necessary resources for communities to grow and innovate. From January 2021 to November 2024, the EDA allocated nearly $6 billion to various projects, resulting in over 554,700 jobs and attracting $67.7 billion in private investment.
Key improvements from this reauthorization include:
- Better programs for local job training and workforce development.
- Creation of the Office of Disaster Recovery and Resilience to support areas affected by disasters.
- Updated rules for grants to make sure communities can quickly get the help they need.
This important decision, included in the Thomas R. Carper Water Resources Development Act of 2024, is expected to help the EDA continue its mission of driving job growth and supporting local economies in the face of new challenges and opportunities.
