SCRLC Survey

SCRLC is a membership-driven organization, and we want nothing more than to do what would be best for you all. Please, please, please take 15-20 minutes to fill out this survey.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SCRLC2025

If a question isn't relevant to you, just skip it. Tell us whatever you'd like to tell us! Ten lucky survey-takers will get a $50 gift card (or charitable donation) for their time.

Grants & Assistance

Community Grant Program

If you serve Chemung County and/or Southeastern Steuben County, apply for a program grant or unrestricted general operating support grant here. Letters of intent are due June 1.

IMLS and NEH funding has been frozen, with current grants suddenly terminated and future grants now in question. This has affected our colleagues around the country, including the organizations whose grants I would normally compile here, like HumanitiesNY and the Greater Hudson Heritage Network. Please support HumanitiesNY and the National Endowment for the Humanities, as I hope you did for IMLS a few weeks ago and NARA before that, with the links listed here.

SCRLC's project to create an online and traveling exhibit about the Underground Railroad in South Central NY is among the HumanitiesNY 2024-2025 action grants with funds suddenly frozen until further notice, as is another project I'm working on with researcher David Hochfelder and the Western NY Library Resources Council about Urban Renewal in New York State.

Ideas & Inspiration

IMLS Advocacy Update

The American Library Association is working with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), the largest union representing museum and library workers, to challenge the Trump administration over the dismantling of IMLS, since that dismantling flies in the face of IMLS's long-standing, bipartisan-supported statutory mandates. Read more here.

NY Attorney General Letitia James has also filed a lawsuit with 20 other AGs over the IMLS elimination.

Museums for All and Blue Star Museums, as Jessica Moquin mentioned to me the other day, are programs from IMLS and NEA, respectively, and now face uncertain futures. These would be good specifics to bring up with your legislators.

Graphics Atlas

In a recent Member Spotlight, Zac Greenfield recommended a site called Graphics Atlas. This site is really cool! Take a look, especially if you're struggling to narrow down an estimated date for an object.

SAA Career Services Open to All in April

The Society of American Archivists is opening its Career Services Commons service for anyone, whether they're SAA members or not. You can speak with career counselors and look through job resources.

Present at SAA's Virtual Research Forum

Submit an abstract of 300 words or less by May 2nd to present a 10- or 5- minute talk at the virtual SAA Research Forum held in July. You could present about global challenges, DEI, collaboration, and more.

National Historic Marker Weekend

The last weekend in April each year is National Historic Marker Weekend, so mark your calendar for April 25-27, 2025. This is a great time to make a quick social media post about one or more of your local historic markers, especially if you're able to clean it!

Roadtrip Nation Opportunity

Know anyone who might be interested in becoming a librarian or archivist? Have them fill out this application for a remarkable opportunity: a public television series about following their path while visiting all kinds of librarians - and afterwards, some free career coaching and support.

Happening in the Neighborhood

Making History in Delaware County

The Delaware County Historical Association hosts a free annual conference in May for historical societies, historians, and any interested members of the public to come together and celebrate local history for the day. This year the conference is on Saturday, May 7 and will feature talks about DCHA's Revolutionary War Veteran's project and a guest presentation from Purple Mountain Press. Tomorrow evening, April 11, they'll be celebrating the opening of a new exhibit about local music and theater.

Ice Cream in Ithaca

Did you know the ice cream sundae was invented in Ithaca? To celebrate, the History Center in Tompkins County is hosting a Sundae Showdown on April 20th. Even if your town isn't the home of ice cream sundaes, this sounds like a fabulous fundraiser. Congratulations to the History Center on their lovely new website, too.

New Logo and Website in Chemung County

The Chemung County Library District, which has just renovated its whole building for Steele Memorial Library in Elmira, has also launched a lovely new logo and website! Take a look.

Connected by Glass in Corning

Corning Museum of Glass, which was recently hailed as one of the top three art museums in the US by Newsweek 🎉, has a fun week planned for Spring Break, including special "glass breaking demos" and a one-time demonstration with innovative mad scientist Tyler Thrasher.

Summer Camp in Cayuga County

The Cayuga Museum in Auburn, home to inventor Ted Case, is launching a week-long camp program for middle schoolers called CASE Camp: Culture, Art, Science & the Environment. The museum is working with a local artist, the NYS OPRHP, and local professors with support from the Guido & Ellen Palma Foundation and NYSCA. The Museum's West End Arts Campus is 98% complete, and you can follow their progress and solicitation for donations here.

A Sale in Soccertown

The Greater Oneonta Historical Society will be holding their 18th Postcard, Book, & Ephemera Show & Sale on Saturday, April 26. Admission is free to visit the 12+ vendors. GOHS will host a discussion program on May 8 about their current exhibit, Soccertown: Then & Now, featuring the soccer legends of Oneonta. GOHS has also begun renovations on their third-floor ballroom.

Books Available from Fenimore

Librarian Haley Shear has been busily weeding the crowded rooms of Fenimore Art Museum's Research Library since taking the position a few years ago. Email Haley to see the list of books.

Broome County Presentations

The Broome County Historical Society, housed within the Broome County Public Library, has monthly presentations planned that all look great, covering local women, the American Revolution, and diners.

Openings in the Field

Last month, I mistakenly typed "Director of Libraries at Alfred University" in this list. The opening is for a position at Alfred State College. My apologies!

That's all for this month! Send me an email if there's anything at your organization you'd like me to include in the next newsletter: clovell@scrlc.org | Claire Lovell, Digital Services Librarian
