News from SCRLC

By the Numbers

Since we're nearing the end of the calendar year, here are links to statistics for the top of your inbox:

CONTENTdm and Accessibility

The new ADA web accessibility requirements also apply to third-party platforms, which includes OCLC's CONTENTdm, the software we use for NYHeritage.org. OCLC has published a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) for CONTENTdm, completed in 2020. Be aware that OCLC is slowly rolling out a new version of CONTENTdm, although it doesn't sound like it will have significant changes on the frontend and we don't expect nyheritage.org to be migrated over to the new version until all of their smaller, less complicated customers are migrated first.

Grants & Assistance

NEH: Rediscovering Our Revolutionary Tradition

Apply by January 15 for grant of up to $350,000 over two years. The projects they'll fund are vast! Digitization is included, as is conservation, cataloging, processing, and updating of old records.

NEH: Chairman’s Grants in Honor of America’s 250th Anniversary

Apply on a rolling basis for projects that can start right away, with amounts up to $25,000. The projects require a matching third-party nonfederal gift, but can include speakers, events, exhibits, and more.

When you write applications for the National Endowment for the Humanities, it may be prudent to consider the news about the NEH's direction and current priorities. This recent New York Times article examines the controversies and criticisms.

Ideas & Inspiration

Hallucinated Citations

Here's another article about AI trends that will give librarians nightmares: Librarians Dumbfounded as People Keep Asking for Materials That Don't Exist.

Present at NYAC 2026

Submit a proposal for the online New York Archives Conference by January 9, 2026. The conference will be free and online on Friday, June 5, 2026.

Present at 2026 SAA Annual Meeting

Submit a program proposal to SAA by December 15 so that you have a reason to visit New Orleans at the end of next July! They will also have hybrid and virtual sessions for those unable to travel.

Wiki Education Courses for Cultural Heritage Practitioners

Wiki Education is partnering with the American Association for State and Local History to improve Wikipedia’s depth and coverage of American history. Apply by December 15 to participate in a free eight-week course called "250 by 2026." Let's get more of our local history on Wikipedia!

Getting into Classrooms

Wondering what teachers think about when it comes to local history? Check out this framework of cultural connections from the NYS Education Department. This is the kind of document that can be extremely helpful when you're approaching a school district for that first step in development a partnership: what can you offer them that they're already mandated to do? You'll also see in this resource kit a list of links to other museums, and those sites might give you some project inspiration.

Practical Archivist Tips for Textiles

This technical leaflet published by the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference (MARAC) is a comprehensive list of best practices and helpful information about caring for textiles of all types. It covers accessioning, identification of fabric types, environmental hazards, and display.

Are you interested in authoring a technical leaflet like this? MARAC is taking submissions!

Happening in the Neighborhood

PastPerfect Online in Tompkins County

The History Center in Tompkins County has a new online catalog with all of their digital assets in it, powered by PastPerfect. Check it out and check back for updates and additions.

Swart-Wilcox House Museum's Barn Update

The Swart-Wilcox House Museum, run by volunteers including a retired librarian, is still fundraising the last bit of money needed to move a donated barn to their property. The renovated barn will serve as climate-controlled storage and provide enough space for their popular Summer Sunday lectures when it rains. SWHM is down to just $30,000 left in their $573,000 goal!

Carriages and Weed Week in Auburn

The Seward House Museum is fundraising specifically for the restoration of William Seward's carriage. They ran a terrific campaign over Facebook around GivingTuesday, starring Walker Goodemote, SHM's Interpretation and Communications Coordinator. Walker recently put together a great series of social media videos about Thurlowe Weed, and this one (costarring Emma Dailey and with a Billye Chabot cameo) is my absolute favorite.

"I Think You Should Leave" Jokes at Fenimore

Fenimore Art Museum has taken a customized approach to their social media channels. Their Facebook account is straightforward, with announcements about events and more served to their 22,000+ followers. Their Instagram is much the same, but they've taken the time to change the wording and crop the images for optimization. Their TikTok account, however, is aiming for that flash-in-the-pan virality that TikTok is known for. If you're a fan of shows like Tim Robinson's absurdist I Think You Should Leave or just generally a connoisseur of meme humor, make sure you check out Fenimore's TikTok account.

Chenango Gingerbread in Syracuse

The Erie Canal Museum, which is outside our region, is hosting their annual gingerbread galley this month. Among the impressive baked builds is a replica of the Railroad Watchman's Tower from Chenango County, which, coincidentally, was recently given some conservation TLC. Chenango County Historical Society is currently hosting a Parade of Tree, with online voting.

Schuyler County Brick Tavern Closed

Schuyler County Historical Society's building, the Brick Tavern, has been closed for renovations. They've been participating in pop-up sales at public events, and their online store is still running.

Sparkling Experiences in Corning

Corning was again named a top small town to visit for Christmas, and in my humble opinion, much of that is thanks to the Corning Museum of Glass's influence. Their gift shop is simply amazing to walk through, but if you're interested in gifting experiences over objects, I wholly recommend the Make Your Own Glass opportunity. My kids, ranging in age from 6 to 21, all LOVED doing it last year.

🎁 Where else can you shop local this month? 🎁

Newfield HS

Newfield Historical Society always has some tastefully classic items for sale, including tote bags, hats, mugs, and magnets.

Delaware County Historical Association has a huge online bookstore, found here.
They have a special promotion with Purple Mountain Press so that 40% of the sale of A History of Delaware County, 1797 - 2007 will be donated to DCHA!

The Greater Oneonta Historical Society has a super cute gift shop with shirts, books, mugs, cards, ornaments, and other very giftable local history items.
They have locally made candles and soap rocks, too!

🎁 🎁 🎁 🎁 🎁 🎁 🎁

Chemung County Historical Society has great books for sale in person and online (see their online giftshop here) - with lots of Mark Twain titles, of course!
They also have a neat fountain pen kit for just $5 and a Jacob's ladder toy. Tragically, both sizes of Mark the Mammoth, the cutest historical stuffed animal around, are out of stock right now.

Cortland County Historical Society created a video about their giftable items, including these gorgeous earrings, plushies, blankets, and more.

Check out the video here and head straight to their online gift shop here.

Edith B. Ford Memorial Library in Ovid has a bookcase and an online store with sturdy custom totes, mugs, and links to customizable shirts & sweatshirts with very cute library themes.

🎁 🎁 🎁 🎁 🎁 🎁 🎁

Chenango County Historical Society has a great gift shop with unique gifts and books of local and broader interest, including the recently published Stitched Together: A History of the Norwich Knitting Co. and Walt Disney.

The History Center in Tompkins County has a gift shop online full of great books, like the one above, and a lot of their books are also available at the Ithaca Shop.

The Seward House Museum has a selection of books, and they also have a cute little shop full of magnets, jewelry, and artwork (including prints of Harriet Tubman by Blake Chamberlain).

🎁 🎁 🎁 🎁 🎁 🎁 🎁

Yates County History Center has a robust online store, which includes a cool shirt with the Public Universal Friend on it!

Cayuga Museum has a huge online bookstore run by Geoff Starks, Director of Development and Outreach.

The Friends of Seymour Library in Auburn are running a holiday book sale. They have a permanent book nook sale -where I just picked up a great LEGO minifigs puzzle for $1!

If I missed your organization, please send me an email!
We'll be sending out a separate email about member giftshops early next week.
