News from SCRLC

New Collection: Oneonta High School Collection

Tina Winstead of Huntington Memorial Library had local Oneonta high school yearbooks scanned for their Advantage Archives site, and she sent us copies of the material for New York Heritage. Some materials weren't yearbooks, though, so we made a separate collection for these things like commencement programs, drama club productions, and student handbooks.

New Collection: Auburn High School Yearbooks

One of the 2024-2025 SCRLC Digitization Grants went to Cayuga Onondaga BOCES SLS, whose member, Beth Cuddy of Auburn High School's library, applied to have their yearbooks digitized. We've worked with the local public library, Seymour Library, to supplement the high school library's collection for any missing books, and we'll have all yearbooks through 2000 finished this spring.

Grants & Assistance

★★★ SCRLC Digitization Grants ★★★

Apply for up to $5,000 from us, your friendly neighborhood library council, for your digitization project. Our most common grant awards are for microfilmed newspapers to go on NYS Historic Newspapers or for us to digitize yearbook collections for NY Heritage - but we're open to new and different projects!

If you need a quote or have any questions, reach out to me at clovell@scrlc.org.

SAA Foundation Opportunity Grant

Apply for a grant of $300 to $2,500 with no match required and no SAA membership required, as long as you're a nonprofit archival repository open to the public in the US. Funds can go to salaries, consultant fees, internships, travel, supplies, and postage. The funds are available until they run out, so apply soon!

Community Partnership Grant

Apply for grants of up to $1,000 from the Foundation of Advancement in Conservation toward a conservation project. Sites may be historic houses, museums, or any organization that has a need for basic collections care, conservation consultation or simple preventive conservation such as re-housing collections. The deadline is February 15 and will come up again in September.

Ideas & Inspiration

Happy Public Domain Day!

On January 1, 2025, copyrighted works from 1929 entered the public domain where they will be free for all to copy, share, and build upon. The Internet Archive posted a long list of the new entries, which include Singin' in the Rain, A Farewell to Arms, The Sound and the Fury, and A Room of One’s Own.

Advocacy Day is February 5

Love your library? Then make sure to drop in on Zoom calls with your legislators on February 5. These appointments are scheduled across the state by NYLA, library councils, and library systems like FLLS, 4CLS and STLS. Your participation may just entail listening during a 15-minute meeting, but that show of support adds up and can influence budget decisions. Check out the legislative priorities for 2025 here.

The New York Archives Conference, which will be held online on Friday, June 13, is seeking proposals.

GHHN Call for Proposals

SAA Call for Submissions

The Society of American Archivist's American Archivist Editorial Board is seeking proposals for a special section in the magazine about user experience. Submit by February 1.

Happening in the Neighborhood

Delaware Desserts and Diaries

The Delaware County Historical Association is hosting a fun event on Saturday, January 18 at 2 pm: staff will read from historic diaries and letters while guests partake in treats and drinks.

In February, visit the museum again to learn how to make beautiful baskets from natural reeds.

Changes and Crafts in Elmira

The Chemung County Library District, whose main library, Steele Memorial Library, has been undergoing radical renovations lately, now has a beautiful new website and logo. Congratulations to director Paul Chapman and his staff on all their exciting accomplishments!

The Chemung County Historical Society is starting a new monthly series of afternoon Victorian craft programs. Registration is encouraged with a $3 fee for supplies. They'll be making snowflakes, pockets, quilling, and stereoscopes this winter.

Hanford at Huntington

Hanford Mills Museum's Ryan Jones and Kevin Jensen will give a public presentation at Oneonta's Huntington Memorial Library about the last fifty years of museum history. Hanford Mills Museum, like many of our other museum members, is closed to the public in January - so this is a nice way to connect!

Seward Antics in Auburn

The Seward House Museum is also closed this month, but they've served up a super cute video about their popular 2024 candlelight tours. Take a look and see if you can spot the staff from the actors.

Behind the Stacks: HR at Cornell

The Cornell University Library shared a lovely piece about the important (if sometimes invisible) work of library staff behind the desk, like Vandana Shah of Uris Library. She ends with "The library is the center of this institution. And when that goes, so does Cornell.”
