News from SCRLC

New Collection: Historic Racing at Watkins Glen: The Andy Gerard Collection

Lester “Andy” Gerard (1929-2013) was an amateur photographer and filmmaker who documented the sports car and formula one races at Watkins Glen from 1955 to 1964.  The Executive Director of the International Motor Racing Research Center, Mark Steigerwald, applied for a 2024-2025 SCRLC Digitization Grant to have us digitize five photo albums created by Gerard and fund the digitization of about a dozen 16mm films. Archivist Joe Schill has taken over the project with archival assistant Duke Argetsinger, whose parents were major figures in the racing scene at Watkins Glen. It's a perfect time capsule, since Gerard was able to get up close and personal.

New Collection: Newfield Middle School Yearbooks

Newfield Historical Society began digitizing all of their high school yearbooks and then used a 2024-2025 SCRLC Digitization Grant to have us finish out the collection. We digitized all yearbooks but are holding back more recent years; these middle school yearbooks are only shared through 2015.

Grants & Assistance

★★★ SCRLC Digitization Grants ★★★

Apply for up to $5,000 from us, your friendly neighborhood library council, for your digitization project. Our most common grant awards are for microfilmed newspapers to go on NYS Historic Newspapers or for us to digitize yearbook collections for NY Heritage - but we're open to new and different projects!

If you need a quote or have any questions, reach out to me at clovell@scrlc.org.

DHPSNY Planning & Assessment Grants

Apply for free professional guidance about preservation, archival needs, and strategic planning. Applicaitons are due March 21.

Digital Preservation Microgrants

The Digital Preservation Outreach & Education Network (DPOE-N) is offering professional development support funds of up to $2,500. This is on a rolling basis through December of 2028.

CLIR Recordings at Risk

Apply for $10,000 to $50,000 toward the digitization of unique recordings with high scholarly value. You should include quotes from multiple "qualified external service providers." Due April 14.

Cayuga Community Fund

If you serve communities in Cayuga County, apply for a grant of up to $10,000 by April 11.

NYSL Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Competitive Grant

The state library just shared via NYLINE that it will soon be opening grant awards of $5,000 to $20,000 for a broad array of library initiatives, with no match required. There isn't a webpage to direct you to yet, but they did note that any library interested in applying should immediately begin the prequalification process and have a Unique Entity Identifier.

Ideas & Inspiration

Support NARA

The Archivist of the United States was dismissed without caused on February 7. Please contact your legislators to support the important work of the National Archives and Records Administration.

Here's language borrowed from the Society of American Archivists you could refer to:

As archivists, we adhere to a set of core values that champion accountability and social responsibility and promote preservation, access, and use. Protecting the integrity of the federal record and affirming the work of those who care for it aligns with our professional codes and responsibilities.

A Fast Company article here outlines the potential impacts of the Archivist's firing. It's bleak.

Records in Contexts: an International Archives Description Standard

The International Council on Archives (ICA) has an Expert Group on Archival Description (EGAD) that just released a first version of Records in Contexts (RIC). To learn the basics about this new conceptual model, attend their English language webinar on March 20.

Student Research Awards

The New York State Archives Partnership Trust is running the 35th annual Student Research Awards, due July 1, for grades 4 through 12. Kids can submit all kinds of projects and on any historical topic, which means this is a great opportunity to encourage students to do research in local history collections!

ICYMI: NYLA Conference Proposals

NYLA's annual conference will be held in Saratoga Springs, November 5-8 this year. Local history programs are popular but rare, so try to think of something you could share. Proposals are due March 21.

Happening in the Neighborhood

Annual History Hunt in Yates

Teams of up to four people can register for $25 to spend the month of May driving around Yates County collecting clues and answers for a history scavenger hunt. Yates County History Center is also still raising money toward a new building for their archives and exhibits. Naturally, I always hope to add everyone's historical materials to NYHeritage.org, but I appreciate the need for financial sustainability, and YCHC's model for research access recently caught my eye.

Wartime Propaganda in Allegany

Many thanks to the Allegany County Historical Society for sharing a post about a lecture at the Wellsville public library on March 20th, all about propaganda posters. Former ACHS director Ron Taylor noted in their recent newsletter that ACHS is taking on materials from the county government, although the storage obligation does not appear to come with any monetary support. Take note of the section on page 6 of the ACHS newsletter where they list recent collection donors; that's a nice touch! Making History in Delaware County

Delaware County Historical Association has lots of events coming up, including a presentation by their Educator, Samantha Misa, who will talk about her recent book Buried Treasures of Upstate New York on April 5. DCHA is planning their annual conference for May 10, which is free for anyone to attend but is generally intended for Delaware County local historians as a way to bring them all together each year.

Like Yates, DCHA is fundraising for a new building for their archives storage. They're also seeking volunteers to help mow the grounds through the summer, as the county will no longer do it.

Be My Neighbor in Chenango

The Chenango County Historical Society is hosting a wonderful looking community event this Saturday based on the legacy of Mister Rogers. They're running the event as part of Civic Learning Week and have invited in local author Suanne Bloome. Executive Director Jessica is fabulous at finding good partner organizations for her initiatives, and this event is no exception.

Active Ancestry in Tompkins

The History Center in Tompkins County is hosting a program called "Active Ancestry" this week, in which they start with a show and tell ("Practice the art of remembering with us") and then a demonstration by a local artist to talk about intentional heirlooms. Think about borrowing this idea in your community!

Awards and Women in Steuben County

Steuben County Historical Society worked with Explore Steuben to share a series of social media posts about local women's history, specifically in aviation. We love to see tourism partnerships, since it's such a win-win situation. Speaking of winning, congratulations to Corning Museum of Glass for being voted one of the Top 3 Best Art Museums in America by Newsweek readers!
