News from SCRLC

Ask the Archivist

Learn about ESLN's newest service, Ask the Archivist, on October 28 at 10 am. Heidi Ziemer from WNYLRC, Susan D'Entremont from CDLC, and Nichole Menchise from LILRC will talk about the service.

New Collection: Robert Bellamy Collection

This collection from the Chenango County Historical Society was funded with Consider the Source money, available because it represents the historically underrepresented.  Robert Bellamy was born in 1911 in Norwich. The Bellamy family was a prominent African American family in Chenango County.

New Collection: Isabel Howland Collection

Seymour Library worked with the Howland Stone Store Museum (which has worked with Wells College in the past) as part of their ARPA-funded project to digitize materials of Cayuga County.  Isabel Howland (1859-1942) was a woman’s rights activist who worked closely with Harriet May Mills, Elizabeth Smith Miller, Eliza Wright Osborne, and Carrie Chapman Catt.

New Collection: Irene Fay Photograph Collection

This collection comes from the Fenimore Art Museum. Irene Fay (1914-1986) was born in Poland (then part of Russia) and spent her formative years in Warsaw. For graduation, she was given a Rolleiflex camera which began her love-affair with photography that endured nearly half a century. These 137 prints are from the New Kingston area of New York from the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s.

New Members

I've gotten so wrapped up in digitization that I forgot to introduce our new members! This year, with help from a few grants, the SCRLC membership has dramatically expanded. In the last 12 months, we've been joined by the Allegany County Historical Society, Cayuga Museum of History & Art, Chenango County Historical Society & Museum, Dryden Town Historical Society, Edmeston Museum, Interlaken Public Library, Steuben County Historical Society, Swart-Wilcox House Museum, and the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Resource Center. Welcome all, and I can't wait to see your new digital collections!

Grants & Assistance

Free Assessments from DHPSNY

Several of our members (Cayuga Museum, Houghton University Archives, and Cuba Circulating Library of STLS) are recent awardees of planning and assessment grants from DHPSNY. Apply by November 11 if you could use some free professional advice on preservation, archival needs, or strategic planning.

Conservation and Preservation of Library Research Materials

These discretionary grants from New York State can provide funding for activities like general preservation surveys, environmental surveys, photograph surveys, rehousing, repair, reformatting to microfilm or the reformatting of photographs to more stable photographic media, improvement to environmental controls and training activities.  This round is due in January, so start planning.

Capital Projects Fund from the New York State Council on the Arts

This is for 501(c)3 arts organizations, and while the deadline is January, there's a mandatory prequalification process that organizations should start now.

Ideas & Inspiration

News Literacy Teaching Resource

Thanks to Penny Sweeney for including this website in her last newsletter for CO BOCES: the Sift from the News Literacy Project. It's meant for secondary educators but academic and public librarians could certainly make use of these ideas as well.

Podcasts from the Past

The WNYLRC Preservation Committee has embarked on podcasts based on their collections in NYHeritage. Their first podcast was also published as a YouTube video in order to show some of the photos. Is this something we should try in our region? Let me know your thoughts!

Path Through History Weekend

I Love New York is sponsoring another weekend of local history this month, October 8-10. Many historical societies and house museums (like the Swart Wilcox House Museum, whose newsletter reminded me of this event) are already planning events that weekend. Is yours?

Intersection of Democracy & Hard History Through the Lens of Primary Sources

A recent ACRL/Choice webinar featured Dr. Hasan Kwame Jeffries of The Ohio State University and it was really exceptional. If you work with historical materials or students, watch this dynamic history professor (a person of color himself) who teaches "hard" history using those materials to great success.

Museum Association Proposals

MANY's 2023 conference will be in Syracuse from April 15 through 18. Consider submitting a proposal as a presenter! Proposals are due November 15.

Happening in the Neighborhood

Digital Scholarship in Binghamton

The new librarians and staff members at Binghamton University Libraries are going big!  They have a series of in-person and online events planned this fall as part of the launch of their new Digital Scholarship Center.  Check out their busy fall plans to get some ideas for your institution.

Antiques in Otego & Oneonta

Helen Rees from the Swart-Wilcox Museum sent out a notice that there would be an estate sale on October 8 for a dearly departed friend of the house museum, Milly Parish. I noticed some interesting antique books that might be good additions to local history collections.  Beginning October 21, check out Oneonta's online fundraiser, an auction, which can be paired with their in-person live auction a week later at the Quality Inn on Route 23.

Clock Maps and Bicycle Fundraisers in Tompkins

For the third straight year, The History Center in Tompkins County's executive director, Ben Sandberg, bicycled an incredible distance in less than 24 hours to raise money for THC. This year, he and a trustee raised over $13,000 and biked over 350 miles!  THC is hosting local expert Mark Monmonier on October 8th to discuss clock and compass maps, which you can see on NYHeritage.org here.

Crafting Workshops

At Fenimore, craft up some Haudenosaunee-designed beaded strawberry pincushions with Mohawk artist Wilma Zumpano on October 8.  In Ithaca, create corn husk dolls with Seneca Nation artist Penny Minner on October 15.

Expanding the Stories of Glass

In this, the Year of Glass, tune in to the free, online 60th Annual Seminar on Glass.  Sessions will cover topics such as: glass in ancient burial customs, changing perspectives on glass conservation, the cultural, economic, and historical significance of glass beads, and topics in contemporary glass.
