New Collection: Postcards of Hartwick Seminary, Hartwick College, and the Surrounding Region

Tim Vatovec, a professor at Hartwick College, helped archivist Rachel Gleiberman digitize a great collection of postcards from the 20th century showing scenes around the Hartwick area.

New Collection: Waterloo Library History

Waterloo Library and Historical Society is one of the oldest library buildings still in its original intended use in New York State. This collection includes some of their first blueprints and plans from the 1870s and 1880s, documenting the building of the beautiful Queen Anne style structure.

New Collection: Eric Lindsay Memorial Postcard Collection

Strictly speaking, this isn't a new collection, but local history librarian Maggie Young just added 100 new postcards to this collection from Steele Memorial Library. The collection includes cityscapes of Elmira, the Chemung River, and much more, ranging from 1900 to 1930.

There's a particularly interesting in-person session in November: Visualizing Data with Special Collections.

Happening in the Neighborhood

New Faces in Allegany County

Welcome to Janelle Varin, the new library director of Alfred State College.

Houghton University shared a sweet video of their new arrivals: the Class of 2029!

Historical Walks and Observatory Talks in Steuben County

Kirk House at Steuben County Historical Society shared one of their oldest photos, showing the flood of 1865 in Hornell. He added that they'll be visiting that corner in their free historic walk tonight, Sept. 12. This press release in the local newspaper includes a nod to the history of the Hornell Public Library and also describes an Erie Canal event hosted by the Andover Historical Society later in the month.

Corning Museum of Glass will be hosting staff from the Rubin Observatory in Chile on Sept. 30, as they discuss the observatory and the world's largest convex mirror. CMOG is also hosting Blown Away Days this month, featuring glass artists from the successful Netflix show.

Lawnfest and Votes in Chemung County

Chemung County Historical Society will participate in Lawnfest this Saturday. In the next few weeks, they'll be installing a Smithsonian exhibit: Voices and Votes: Democracy in America. Archivist Rachel Dworkin has been digitizing part of their great women's suffrage collection in support of this exhibit. CCHS is also partnering with the Arnot Art Museum to host a poster contest. Tickets for CCHS's extremely popular Ghost Walk in October are up for sale, as well.

Revolutionary Reenactment in Yates County

Yates County History Center is hosting a Revolutionary War era ghost walk of their own this Saturday at 2 pm in Benton. They have an exhibit up now called The World Turned Upside Down that covers the Revolutionary War, too. In October, they'll be hosting "Murder and Mayhem" to share those spooky tales from local history.

Walking Around Schuyler County

Schuyler County Historical Society's Heather O’Grady Evans has announced their fall dates for Walkin' History, a walking tour series that travels around the county. They'll visit Odessa on Sept. 13 and Burdett (formerly called Tadpole!!) on Sept. 20.

Book Sales, Painting and Exhibits in Seneca County

Waterloo Library & Historical Society is hosting its annual book sale this upcoming weekend, which it holds in conjunction with six other libraries: the Between the Lakes Book Sale Trail. They're hosting a paint-along program on Sept. 18, in which participants will start with a blank canvas and end with a canal scene. Seneca Falls Historical Society's director, Jonathan Monfiletto, recently spoke at the Women's Rights National Historic Park (also in Seneca Falls). He presented about photographer Grace Woodworth, and you can stop by the historic park to see the exhibit about her.

A Real Treasure Hunt in Tompkins County

Last week, the History Center in Tompkins County opened up their treasure hunt fundraiser, made possible by a spectacular $10,000 donation of jewels from The Jewelbox, a local jeweler in Ithaca. Nearly 1,000 people across 174 teams registered to find the treasure trove (at $100 per team), and while the grand prize was found, there are more prizes still out there around Tompkins County.

Packed Calendars in Cayuga County

Seymour Library in Auburn is hosting two history programs: The Golden Age of Railroads in Cayuga County on Sept. 18 and From Critic to Convert: William Seward, the Erie Canal, and the Making of a Political Identity on Sept. 25. The Cayuga Museum is hosting a presentation in partnership with the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park (in Auburn) on Sept. 17 in honor of Underground Railroad Month and on the 20th, they'll host a performance of dance that pays tribute to the Black freedom movement. My daughter and I are excited about a Fanny Seward Girl Scout Day next weekend at the Seward House Museum; could your institution offer a scout badge? The SHM is hosting a lecture about William Seward's sister-in-law, Lazette Worden, who participated in the Underground Railroad in Auburn, on Sept. 26.

The Canal Society of NYS, headquartered in Port Byron, is hosting Creating the Erie Canal on Sept. 25.

Historical Fiction and More in Cortland County

Cortland County Historical Society is hosting walking tours on Sept. 20 and Oct. 4. They're hosting a special author event (for The Girl in the Glass Coffin) in their new event space on Grace Street, which is also where their four October Lunch & Learn events will take place with great subjects being covered. Their annual photo scavenger hunt opens October 1.

Grants Awarded in Chenango County

Congratulations to Chenango County Historical Society for being recipients of DHPSNY's Preservation Survey assessment grants! A nice picture of CCHS's Zac Greenfield was even featured in DHPSNY's email. CCHS has also recently been awarded a Technical Assistance grant from the Preservation League of NYS. Congratulations to Jessica Moquin for her success! Visit CCHS in Norwich and other Chenango County locations on Sept. 20 for Open Farm Day, a Cornell Cooperative Extension countywide event.

Big Moves in Broome County

Congratulations to Jesse Koennecke, most recently the Director of Acquisitions and E-Resource Licensing Services at Cornell University Library, who is now the Senior Assistant Dean for Collections and Technology Services at Binghamton University. BU Libraries has also shared links to recent publications by their faculty, including Erin Rushton's "Digitizing Pre-1978 Dissertations at Binghamton University Libraries," Jeremy Dibbell's "A Great Variety of Books: The Confiscation and Redistribution of the Libraries of Boston’s Loyalists, 1776 to 1779," and Jennifer Embree's "The Story of the Modern Seed Library." Well done, everyone!

Mohawk Valley Gives in Otsego County

The Swart Wilcox House Museum in Oneonta is participating in Mohawk Valley Gives and hopes to be the "Rookie of the Year," which comes with a $1,000 bonus. Help them out by donating on Sept. 19. The Greater Oneonta Historical Society is also participating in MVG. Another GOHS fundraiser this month is the popular Hops for History, on Sept. 27: a bar crawl throughout downtown Oneonta. Unfortunately, GOHS's bus trip to Old Sturbridge Village was canceled due to low registration.

Reservoirs and Barrels in Delaware County

Delaware County Historical Association sent out a reminder about their "Archive in an Envelope" program, made possible by the Catskill Watershed Corporation because the history materials in the envelopes are about local reservoirs. Educators or the general public can reach out to DCHA for a copy. DCHA is currently borrowing an exhibit from Hartwick College (but drawn heavily from DCHA materials) about the Catskill Reservoirs and the communities displaced by their construction. DCHA has recently made facilities improvements, including a parking lot expansion, electrical work, lighting, and siding.
Over in East Meredith, the Hanford Mills Museum is hosting some very exciting workshops before closing for the season: a coopering workshop and a historic cooking workshop among them!
