SCI Community Highlights

Volunteers Rake Leaves for 18 Senior Homes

On Friday, 11/15 and Saturday, 11/16, a total of 18 homes of Woburn seniors were visited by volunteers eager to rake leaves as a part of Social Capital Inc.’s Annual Leaf Raking Event. The generosity and spirit of our community were on full display that weekend, as over 150 volunteers raked leaves –brightening up the day for our Woburn seniors. We also hosted our first corporate volunteer day with 4 companies who brought 46 volunteers!

By the end of the 2-day event, over 951 bags of leaves were cleared from the lawns of our local seniors. One senior who recently celebrated her 88th birthday had 88 leaf bags!

All volunteers were offered pastries courtesy of Food Link. Our Saturday afternoon volunteers enjoyed delicious chips and salsa courtesy of Annas Taqueria. Thank you to Woburn Paint & Hardware for their consecutive donation of leaf bags. Thank you to Woburn Lowe’s for their second consecutive year donating rakes, gloves, and leaf bags.

Thank You To Our 2024 Leaf Raking Event Sponsors!

Youth Work It Out with LET and FreddyLive Fitness!

On October 26, over 25 youth from Woburn, Winchester and beyond, joined Freddy Gonzalez of FreddyLive Fitness for a workout and conversation about mental health organized by the Leaders for an Equitable Tomorrow (LET) interns of the Network for Social Justice and Social Capital, Inc. (SCI).

After a fun workout, a Woburn police officer, a clinical social worker, and Freddy Gonzalez shared their personal stories and strategies for maintaining mental health, emphasizing the significance of fitness, nutrition, and reaching out to supportive community members. At the end, the youth shared their takeaways and indicated they'd come back for more! If you’re interested in attending another Work It Out event in the winter, please fill out this form.

Join LET at the next event on December 9th, 6-7PM, in the Woburn Public Library's Maker Space, a holiday social with a gingerbread building competition! More details to be announced.

LET Receives Its First Program Sponsors

Social Capital Inc. is thrilled to announce that our Leaders for an Equitable Tomorrow (LET) program received its first-ever sponsorships from Everett Bank, LightWork Therapy & Recovery, and the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. These new sponsors supplement the funding provided by our grant from Winchester Hospital Community Benefits, enabling us to expand our LET programming.

LET is dedicated to youth mental health, with an intersectional framework that recognizes how racism, socioeconomic inequality, and other social issues can influence mental health and well-being. SCI’s LET youth interns include Jacoby Altman, Luke Sheldon, and Valery Verdier. SCI’s LET Leaders in Training is a new volunteer component that fosters peer mentorship from the LET interns. Our three new volunteers are Mya Doan, Girmari Francoi, and Rayane Khoulani Hadjiat.
