Sadly, with the sudden passing of S.C. Senator John L. Scott, the state has lost a dedicated public servant who understood the value of a college education and fought to make it accessible for anyone.


In honor of Sen. Scott we are again sharing his “Legislative Spotlight” published in the SCICU Newsletter last November. You’ll see how proud he was of supporting higher education, including independent colleges and universities.

Power:Ed awards SCICU $25,000 to support undergraduate research at S.C. HBCUs

S.C. Independent Colleges and Universities (SCICU) is pleased to announce the receipt of a $25,000 grant from Power:Ed to foster increased participation in the SCICU Undergraduate Student/Faculty Research Program by students attending SCICU’s five member historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) — Allen University, Benedict College, Claflin University, Morris College, and Voorhees University.

Federal update
Congress, Washington, DC

Over the summer the Supreme Court of the United States handed down one of the most impactful higher education rulings in decades.


SCOTUS held that Harvard and the University of North Carolina violated the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by considering race in their undergraduate admissions processes.
