Dear Friends and Colleagues,
As we move into the heart of the fall semester, I am pleased to share a few important updates and reflections from across the SCICU community. We are looking forward to gathering at Furman University for the SCICU Board Meeting on October 8–9. This will be a valuable opportunity to reconnect, share insights, and continue our collaborative work in support of independent higher education in South Carolina.
We are proud to announce the publication of the 2025 Statistical Abstract. This comprehensive resource provides invaluable data on our member institutions—enrollment trends, financial aid, academic programs, and more. It’s an essential tool for understanding the impact and reach of independent colleges and universities in our state.
I recently had the pleasure of visiting Columbia College and meeting with Provost Dr. Jeffrey Bowe and Dr. Tracy West, Dean of the Division of Education. Our conversation focused on the college’s inspiring efforts to prepare the next generation of K–12 educators. I was deeply impressed by the care, experience, and professionalism they bring to this mission. Columbia College is also celebrating a record-breaking enrollment this semester and has beautifully remodeled its dining facilities—clear signs of the great momentum and energy on campus. Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our shared mission.
One of our SCICU member institutions received a notable honor. Claflin University has been named a 2025 Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader by the U.S. Department of State. This prestigious recognition highlights Claflin’s strong commitment to global engagement, academic excellence, and its active participation in international exchange programs through the Fulbright initiative. The university was honored for promoting diversity and inclusion and for supporting students, faculty, and administrators in pursuing global opportunities.
On a somber note, we mourn the passing of Mike LeFever, a dedicated leader whose impact on higher education in South Carolina will be felt for generations. Mike served more than a decade as SCICU’s 6th President, where he championed student support, strengthened institutional collaboration, and tirelessly advocated for independent colleges and universities across the state. His leadership helped secure vital resources for students and member institutions, and his vision fostered a spirit of unity and shared purpose among SCICU campuses. Mike’s legacy lives on in the expanded opportunities for private higher education and the enduring respect he earned from colleagues and educators alike. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends, and we honor his lasting contributions to SCICU and the broader higher education community.
