SCIS Parents,

Our first round of 5th grade STAAR testing is complete and we are very proud of our young scholars.   Our teachers have done an excellent job preparing them and we are excited to see their results later next month.

A huge thanks to our SCIS PTA for providing each 5th grader with a bottle of water and a snack during our 5th grade STAAR testing this week!  Our PTA is second to none!

I hope you will watch the video above about the following 4 important items:

1.) Cell Phones at SCIS Survey- Open on Friday (See Video)
Action Item: We want to hear your p references on student cell phone access and use  in our schools.
  • Tomorrow each of you will be getting an email link from SurveyMonkey.com with a brief survey for you to let us know your preferences regarding student cell phone use and access in our schools.
  • We absolutely want to ensure that we provide all parents an opportunity to weigh in on this issue, just like we would on any other matter.
  • It is our goal to allow everyone an opportunity to express their preferences regarding cell phone use and access and provide feedback via the survey monkey survey which will be in your inbox sometime tomorrow.

2.)Academic UIL: (See video)
This Friday and Saturday, April 12th and 13th our students will compete against the best of the best in the area in academic UIL.  Please ensure that you have communicated with Mrs. Reagan (via the form) the transportation arrangements you have made for your child.  If you have any questions about academic UIL, reach out to your child's coach, myself, or Mrs. Reagan.
Here a link to our UIL website.

3.) No School, Friday April 19th
Enjoy a three day holiday next friday!

4.) 5th Grade - Growth and Development Video (See Video)
Action Item for 5th grade Parents:
As part of the health curriculum, the Always Changing video on Human Growth and Development will be shown to the 5th grade on April 26, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. during 9th period.
  • Boys and girls will be separated for the Growth and Development class.
  • Mr. Smith, Puster Elementary counselor, will talk with the boys.
  • Tamara Pierce, the nurse at Sloan Creek, will assist with the girls.
  • They will be available to answer questions and concerns from the students after the presentation of the video.
  • We will only answer questions that have to do with the information from the video.
  • As the parent/guardian, you have the most important role in teaching your child about their growth and development.
  • We encourage you to preview the videos that will be shown and learn more about how to talk to your child.
Please watch this video with your child before April 26th.

Sitting and watching together, then answering what questions they have is a wonderful way to allow your child to learn this information in the safety of your home and within the context of your family beliefs.  It would be our goal that when we show the video on April 26th and lead this learning that your child has already seen it with you and you are able to answer their questions

  • Always Changing-Girls (not the original version).
Please take this opportunity to talk openly with your child and answer their questions within the context of your family's values and beliefs.

**ACTION ITEM: EACH 5th GRADE PARENT NEEDS TO COMPLETE THE PERMISSION FORM HERE:   Click Here  (Opt in / Opt out)

***If we do not receive a form from you by April 17, 2019, your child will NOT be allowed to participate in the class.

WSMS Principal's Coffee - Friday, April 12th
I would like to invite you to our upcoming Principal's Coffee, on Friday, April 12th at 9:00 a.m. The Principal's Coffee is a forum discussion for all incoming 7th grade parents to visit with me about the middle school experience over a cup of coffee. During the discussion, I will provide information about the overall 7th experience at Willow Springs and answer any questions you may have. Attending parents are encouraged to park in the front parking lot to enter and sign-in through the front office.

Rising 7th grade parents WSMS Book Fair -- Book Fiesta!
We would like to invite you to our Book Fiesta Fair April 15-18! We will have the summer read choices for rising 7th-9th graders along with other great books to get in your students' hands before the long summer break. The list this year appears to be the best yet!  Please stop by the WSMS library anytime 8:15-4:30 to shop our selection.

From the Nurse
ATTENTION 6TH GRADE PARENTS:
There are two vaccinations required by the State of Texas for 7th grade: Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) and the meningococcal vaccine.  Typically students will receive these vaccines at their 11 or 12 year old check up.  If your student receives this vaccine, please email or fax a copy of their vaccination record to me.  Please don't wait until the week before school starts to get these vaccines.  Typically there will be a shortage of the vaccines, before school starts, because it is required of all 7th grade students in Texas.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

Thank you for your help!  My email is:  tamara_pierce@lovejoyisd.net and the fax # is 469-742-8401.

School Report Cards from 2017-18
I wanted to make you aware that the 2017-18 School Report Card (SRC) from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) is available on the district website under "Quick Links" and then under "Required Postings" or directly at:
The same reports can be accessed on our campus website under the "About" tab and then selecting TEA School Campus Report Cards.  The SRC provides information on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR), as well as information student enrollment, class size averages, and financial expenditures.
As you may recall, districts do not receive a SRC but the STAAR performance at each campus contributed to Lovejoy ISD being one of only four districts of the 1227 districts and charter schools in Texas to receive the highest rating on the state accountability system with an overall grade of "A" with a scale score of 97 out of 100 possible points.  Please contact me if you have any questions concerning our School Report Card from the Texas Education Agency. Thank you for your continued support of Sloan Creek Intermediate School.
