Life on the Grid -- The Beauty of Tile

I love spring.

The days are longer, the grass is greener and the cherry blossoms are in bloom. Mother Nature has hit the refresh button and we all rejoice! There is something promising in the air and every year I am surprised how much better I feel when this miracle happens. It is like waking up from a long nap...energized and renewed.

This cycle of awakening seems to affect us at SCL too. Our eyes are wide open as we begin the hunt for what's new and fresh in the world of design. We love seeing the new Spring fabric collections and, of course, nothing is more invigorating than our trip to the Furniture Market in High Point, NC. (We leave next week, so be sure to look for us on Facebook and Instagram !)

On a more local level, we recently attended the Spring Market Day at the Washington Design Center. Take a look under What's Happening at SCL to see highlights. It was truly a feast for the senses.

And speaking of senses, please check out the piece on Sensory Design in our Design Industry Spotlight . This is a new movement in interior design that promotes engaging all 5 senses to achieve wellness in places where we live and work. It is fascinating.

There is so much to discover in this month's newsletter, including everything you ever wanted to know about tile in Kim's Pearls -- Life on the Grid--The Beauty of Tile .

So please read on. I think you will find it refreshing!

Warm regards,
Kim

As a design professional, I am often called upon to help a client select tile for a renovation project or new construction. There is always a little panic in their voice and I understand it. Tile can be intimidating. There are so many wonderful options out there, which makes it hard to get started and even harder to commit. Additionally, mistakes are costly to undo. Tile is permanent, so it is important to choose the right material and the right person for the job.

With a little knowledge we can quell the panic and embrace the beauty of tile.

  • We love when we find a hidden gem--and New Ravenna is one of those! New Ravenna is a designer and manufacturer of stone and glass mosaic tiles. "The company's products are handcrafted mosaics that are fashioned into decorative borders, murals, field tile and medallions... The end result is a custom, one-of-a-kind work of art in mosaic tile."

  • Sensory design, the engaging of any or all of the five senses as part of a design project, is being linked to the wellness of spaces. Sight is the obvious sense that is linked to interior design but the other senses can be brought into a project as well to "improve health by connecting the body and mind." Here is an article from Houzz that discusses other examples of how interior design can incorporate the five senses into your home.
