FROM THE DESK OF WENDY YOUNG, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
To ALL PHYSICIANS AND PRACTICE MANAGERS:

Blue Shield of California recently announced it would be providing $200 million in direct support to physician practices and other health care providers. Today, the payor started accepting applications for the support, which will be offered in a number of categories:

Loans: Blue Shield is providing up to $100 million in in provider loans. Loan amounts must not exceed $2 million.

Advance Payments: Blue Shield is providing up to $100 million in advance payments for contracted Blue Shield providers. There is a grace period of six months and must be repaid in full by 12 months either directly or through offset of future claims.

Value-Based/Risk Sharing Contracts: Physicians can convert their contracts to value-based contracts (where available) or risk sharing contracts, which provide a monthly base revenue stream.

Providers can also opt to receive the patient cost-sharing portion of the bill at the time the claim is paid, eliminating the time and expense of collecting patient out-of-pocket costs.

The California Medical Association is encouraging interested physicians to apply as soon as possible, as the available funding is limited. For more information and to apply for the programs, email Financecommunication@blueshieldca.com.

Sutter SR Regional Hospital ICU Team receives their handmade hair coverings from the North Bay Sewists Unite group. They were ecstatic to receive the hair coverings! "I wish you could have seen their faces when I brought them to the unit. It was like Christmas!"

SCMA rallied the community to begin making masks in the event of a N95 shortage. I posted a call for home sewists on social media which led me to a Facebook group called 'North Bay Sewists Unite.' We went from 30 sewists to over 1100 home sewists making masks, at no cost to you. As of this morning, we have requests for over 24,000 masks and head coverings from hospitals, first responders, nursing facilities, schools, daycare facilities, grocery stores, etc. If your practice needs, please use the donation request form below, but please be patient as we try to fulfill all the requests.

I have submitted a request for 300 face shields that should be delivered to SCMA shortly. If you are in need of face shields, please email me at exec@scma.org.

Attn: Solo/Small Practices: Are you having trouble obtaining PPE supplies? If Yes, please email me at exec@scma.org and tell me what items you are seeking and how much you need of each item.

Senator McGuire's office requested that I take the pulse of regional practices to see if getting supplies is an isolated issue or a regional/practice size related issue. With enough need, perhaps SCMA can submit a large order on behalf of many practices and get more of a response from the key holders of PPE supplies.

Barriers to re-opening your practice or resuming 'business as usual': Looking ahead, what barriers do you anticipate? SCMA is setting up a medical professionals 'Town Hall' conference with Senator McGuire in the near future to address these and other issues. Please email questions or concerns you would like Senator McGuire to address during the town hall to me at exec@scma.org. Will keep you posted.

TELEMEDICINE TOOLKITS FOR GENERAL PRACTITIONERS

Amwell Grants and Public Funding Program: CMA Physician Services recently announced a partnership with Amwell, a leading telehealth solutions platform. Through this partnership, all California physicians have access to Amwell’s telehealth platform at a discounted rate for the next twelve months and no monthly fees until May 2020. However, CMA Physician Services recognizes that not all physician practices have the means to implement the Amwell telehealth solution into their practice, despite the discounted rate. The Amwell Grants and Public Funding Program assists Amwell customers seeking to secure funding to support implementing telehealth into their practice. Amwell does not provide or pay for grant writing on a practice’s behalf, but will provide expertise, tools, and grant monitoring to help obtain the funds. Eligibility: Must be an Amwell customer.
