A Message from President Sven Plein, MD, PhD
I am honoured and excited to begin my term as president of SCMR this year. First and foremost, I want to thank Subha Raman, MD, MSEE, FSCMR, for steering the Society through another testing year in 2021. Thanks to her steadfast leadership, SCMR has weathered the storm and has come out stronger than ever before. My particular gratitude also goes to Michael Salerno, MD, PhD, FSCMR, and all SCMR staff for delivering a truly amazing 2022 Scientific Sessions, despite the challenges of pivoting last minute to a fully virtual format. The depth and quality of the science and clinical evidence presented at the meeting were an impressive testament of ingenuity, diversity, and creativity of our community. Finally, I would like to thank our board members old and new, committee members, and all other volunteers dedicated to our common goal of advancing and promoting appropriate use of CMR around the globe.

We have big plans for the next year. In a recent members survey we asked you what the Society’s future priorities should be. Your answers were clear: shorter CMR exam times, improved reimbursement, support for CMR practitioners around the world for setting up local services, and improved awareness and training in CMR for all practitioners. With the help of our new management company, AMC, the Board of Trustees has undertaken a Strategic Planning Exercise to set the roadmap for delivering these priority areas, and we will keep you posted on our progress. We are also working on a number of new educational activities and are looking forward to our first in-person meeting in over 2 years at the AI in CMR Summit in London on 5-6 May 2022. I hope to see many of you there.

With the very best wishes for 2022,
Sven Plein, MD, PhD

Verification Committee Update
The SCMR Verification Committee supports the cardiac MR community by ensuring that practitioners have met multidisciplinary society–defined standards for Cardiac MR training (Levels I, II, or III). The goal of the committee is to provide verification as to the competency achieved by applicants and therefore help assure that CMR is practiced by qualified individuals providing a quality product. Imaging specialists who have completed the required training and cardiac MR case requirements submit through the SCMR for review by the verification committee. The committee has worked to streamline the application process, including providing a form letter for mentors / lab directors to ensure that all required criteria have been addressed. Additionally, the SCMR has committed to reduce the turn-around for applications to 30 days or less.

CHD Research Study Highlight—CERAMICi

The arrival of the pandemic and focus on athlete return to play (RTP) after COVID-19 have elevated the importance of diagnosing myocarditis in a younger population. Drs. Jason Johnson, Jonathan Soslow, and Simon Lee hope to expand the investigation of practice variation of CMR utilization across more pediatric centers, particularly with regard to the utilization of parametric mapping. Please complete the REDCap survey that will take 10 to 15 minutes to fill out, describing your individual/center's practices using CMR for myocarditis in general, and specifically in the post-COVID athlete.

Metal Implant Artifacts
As the world changes, more cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED) become MRI compatible. As we as a society scan more legacy CIEDs, technologists are faced with adapting our imaging techniques to eliminate metal artifacts. In MRI, we need to know how to change our techniques. Vendors are producing more metal artifact reduction sequences (MARS), but if there is no MARS sequence available to your center, or your protocol, here are a few tricks immediately available to us.

The first option is to change the sequence from a steady-state free precession (SSFP) cine to a gradient recalled echo (GRE). The sequence will lose contrast and SNR, but the image will gain in reducing metal artifact.

The second option is to increase the bandwidth. Increasing the bandwidth reduces the signal amplitude, increases the noise, and reduces the scan time (by allowing a reduction of TE and TR). The metal artifact can be moved off the area of interest by widening the bandwidth.

The third option is trying a delta frequency shift. Potentially, a delta frequency shift allows for the artifact to be moved off the myocardium. However, a delta frequency shift can create an issue with moving the off-resonance frequency onto the area of interest, so it may not be the option.

Vendors are working on metal reduction techniques, and sequences are changing. Keeping current with new developments is a great way to ensure that the center uses the best sequence technique for the patients!
The SCMR Introductory Course in CMR (2021 Update)
Participate in the 2021 revision of the SCMR Introductory course in CMR. This course is designed to cover theory, knowledge, and some of the skills required for core training in CMR. The course takes approximately 10 hours to complete and is split into 15 topics. There is a strong interactive component, with questions at the end of each topic, as well as lots of case reviews along the way.

The course is not designed to replicate the practical aspects of scan acquisition and live reporting that can only be gained from working in a CMR department. The course will, however, provide you with 10 hours of theoretical and case-based learning and contribute 30 online cases toward your level I, II, or III certificate.

If you are enrolled in the course via SCMR, a certificate will be provided at the end. Nonmembers will need to sign up as a guest to complete. Registration is free to SCMR members and $100 for nonmembers. To learn more about becoming an SCMR member, visit the SCMR membership page.

CMR in Canada—A Vibrant Community with Exceptional Academic Activity
The Canadian Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance was founded in Calgary, Alberta, in 2005. Since its inception, CMR in Canada has exploded, with availabilities in most university hospitals across our vast country. Consequently, a vibrant community has established itself with important contributions to academia. Most notably, among others, recent key contributions include hemorrhagic infarction research (Dr. Kumar, Sudbury, and Dr. Ghugre, team Toronto), oxygen sensitive CMR (Dr. Friedrich, team McGill) and the ever expanding role of CMR in COVID (Dr. Hanneman, team Toronto).

Since being rebranded and restructured by recent Past President Dr. Idan Roifman, The Canadian Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging (SCMRI Canada) became an affiliate of the
Canadian Cardiovascular Society, increasing its outreach to everyday cardiologists by regularly hosting CMR workshops at the annual Canadian Cardiovascular Conference, and establishing consensus/guideline statements with regards to CMR safety1 among others.

Under our new leadership of President Dr. Andreas Kumar and Vice President Dr. Michael Chetrit, SCMRI Canada is planning to expand further with a webinar series and research awards for trainees to be presented at the annual Canadian Cardiology Congress. Canadians are known for their warm hearts—SCMRI Canada makes them resonate!
