Executive Director's Note
Dear SCMS Members,

Best wishes from the SCMS Home Office!  We are in preparation mode for the new membership year beginning July 1. This includes the calls for volunteers, SCMS awards, and conference proposal submissions. Timelines for each of these categories is provided in this issue of News Brief.

As you will recall, beginning with this membership year, our cycle begins July 1, 2018 and runs through June 30, 2019. The rates for both individual and institutional memberships will revert back to the 12-month tiers that were in effect prior to the 10-month pro-rated 2017-2018 membership cycle. Anyone joining this month will have their fee applied to the new membership year thereby receiving an additional two months for free.

I urge you to consider lending your talents to SCMS by signing up to become a committee volunteer. There is no better or more direct avenue for involvement and making your voice heard than through committee service. You will find links to information on the various types of committees within the Society and the application form in this edition. Please note the upcoming application deadline of Friday, May 25 at 5:00PM CT.

It's not too late for Seattle area members to sign up to be a part of the 2019 Seattle Host Committee.  We have provided a link to posted information on the SCMS website explaining what service on the committee entails and examples of previous service timelines. Kirsten Moana Thompson of Seattle University will serve as this year's Committee Chair.

In closing, I am very pleased to announce a new partnership with Oxford University Press providing SCMS members with a discount across OUP's large list of film and media studies publications.

As always, don't hesitate to let me or any member of the Board know if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions.

2018 Conference Survey - Thank You!

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year's conference survey. We received 340 responses this year, all of which will be carefully reviewed by the Board of Directors, Home Office, and Director of Conferences and Events.

As planning for each conference begins several years in advance, change takes time and is based on many considerations intended to serve the needs of the membership as a whole. Using your feedback, we have incorporated many improvements and cost-saving measures, and will continue to do so.

Program Chair, Paula J. Massood
Host Committee Chair, Kirsten Moana Thompson

COMMUNITY NEWS AND EVENTS
Congratulations, Joshua Nelson!

Congratulations to SCMS ex-officio board member Joshua Nelson, who was named a President's Associates Presidential Professor at the 2018 University of Oklahoma  Faculty Tribute Ceremony.
Joshua is the Director of Film and Media Studies and Associate Professor of English at the University of Oklahoma where he is also affiliated faculty with Native American Studies.

Presidential professorships were established to recognize those faculty members  who excel in all of their professional activities and who relate those activities to the students they teach and mentor.

This is a big honor and richly deserved!
